Water Bottle

What kind of water bottle do you use on climbs, and for other outdoor pursuits? Is there any area where they perform well or poorly? Do you use your water bottle for anything other than carrying liquid?

If you want to go more in depth and enjoy taking surveys, you can head to this link: surveymonkey.com/s/Y2Q2K9P

Cheers!

On the refill note (might as well make this thread useful), what's everyone's though on the chemical "seepage" from reusing plastic bottles. I do quite a bit (A LOT), but I recall hearing something about you should only reuse about 3-4 times.

A 2L Pepsi bottle with webbing duct taped around it, wall style. Cheap, crams down real small when empty, clips into things. Good for long days. Otherwise, Camelbak brand bladder (with bellow thing inside) recently for daytrips, in an REI Flash 18l pack. Webbing loop through hose hole at top of pack to keep bladder upright.

If using the Gatorade bottles, bring a spare cap or whatever, since they tend to break at the threads. Or maybe it's just me shredding all of the gnar, slaying all of the bodies, and sending all of the proj's.

I wouldn't either. The glue you use for resoles is way more toxic than BPAs.

I use Platypus bladders. They tend to break over time, especially when folded. But this what Return Every Item is for.

I'm a fan of Gatorade bottle with accessory cord for smaller multipitch stuff. Camelback for longer approaches and climbs.

"and don't get me started about people talking about how bad BPA's are, while they drink booze and smoke cigarettes. LOL!"

Just want to encourage you to hijack this post or create a new one - you definitely need to get started on this! I need a good laugh today : )

Btw, why would you worry about heart attacks and car accidents?

The double liners from boxed wine actually make pretty good bladders. I use them for when I am going into a crag for a few days that doesn't have really close water. They fit in my pack better than gallon jugs and hold a ton. They hold up better than they look like they would and fold up small for carrying out without cracking. Cheaper than Camelbacks and you get the wine.

Gatorade or Smart Water bottles. I prefer the smart water bottles because I can fill them easier from shallow creeks but gatorade bottles don't fall out of my pack every time I have to tie my shoes.

Except you dont eat your shoe glue. But I agree, BPA is not high on my list of worries. The way the food market is right now, with companies adding a crap ton of sugar and chemicals like aspartame, there is a whole lot of other stuff to worry about. Apparently red meat can kill you... nytimes.com/2012/03/13/heal…

I'm surprised bearbreeder hasn't shown up yet to post pics of Alex Honnold using a water filled gatorade bottle and smugly wondering how naive anyone is for worrying about something he's seen a pro climber do.

Oh, and sprinkle in a few smiley faces.

plastic is pure fucking evil, I wont even grow a tomato plant in a 5 gallon bucket. I dont want my ripped pecs to turn into saggy man tits from leaking estrogen. How are your man tits looking? Estrogen leaks in your water even when BPA free-

I always used 2 liter coke bottles cause they smash up when empty for an easier pack job at the end of the day, now its a pain in the ass...

That is a great idea, I'm going to try it!

Technically, they're just estrogen emulators. No big deal, just a poser.

Scott McMahon wrote:I recall hearing something about you should only reuse about 3-4 times.
That sounds like BS. There should be less plasticizer leaching into the fluid after every use. I suppose there could be some effect like the plastic degrades a bit (molecules get shorter), so the plasticizer becomes more mobile and leaks more easily, but I doubt it.

Locker wrote:Worrying about BPA seems sort of ridiculous to me.
My plastics professor used to say that he never worries about it for himself, but he wouldn't give a baby a teething ring with plasticizers in it. Think scale - we're 15-20 times bigger than a baby (depending on your diet).

I'm a huge fan of this:

shop.camelbak.com/eddy-kids…

Why? Easy to drink with one hand, clips on harness, strong clip (won't break), 14 oz. Could clip one on each side of the harness.

I can't imagine bpa to be any worse than all that aluminum that gets on your hands from belaying.

Maybe a little off topic, but I know a guy who was on the study that started all the BPA scare. The mice were living in plastic cages, drinking from plastic water bottles, and eating from plastic bowls. He said everything was chewed on, and the mice probably ate a tenth or more of their weight in plastic each day. He suggested it might be a little hazardous to your health to eat your water bottle each day.

So my main goal when selecting a water bottle for the day is to make sure it isn't one of the old pee bottles.
