I have been looking into trying my first of width, and I'm not really sure what I'm getting my self into. does anyone know of any in the southern NM area? Preferably easy.

Don't know of any, but OW by definition is difficult.

I understand I just don't want someone to tell me to go find the century crack. Haha I'm can sport climb 12a I sh so I figure anything lower then a 5.10 would be fine

There is a variation to the 2nd pitch of King Me ( mountainproject.com/v/king-…) on Checkerboard Wall in the Dona Ana Mountains that is fairly straight forward but strenuous. When the normal route exits the chimney onto the face at climber's left you just keep going up the narrowing crack until it stops. Then climb the face above to the belay.

Lol see how you feel about that on your first 5.8 OW.

Hilarious....

What you are getting yourself into is pain, suffering and the most technical climbing there is. Which also makes it some of the best.

Not sure where exactly you are in Southern NM, but Cochise Stronghold in Arizona is about 3 hours from Las Cruces and is chock full of offwidths.

Love this thread! Getting my first big bro, the goldy, i think it spans 18". I look forward to see what offwidth is available for s nm. Cochise may be a bit toasty right now... but september/october on, yer good.

Here you go. Not really southern New Mexico, but it is within 50 miles of Albuquerque. Probably about 150 - 200 feet!

Opposite direction, but vista verde, the walls south of the bat cave have occasional OW routes. Easily day trippable and temps are okay from bout 3-4p on

where about is that death crack Howard?

Hello Ian:

It's on one of the north ridges of Ladron Peak. Pretty place, about 4 mile cross-country approach hike. Bill Lawry and I spotted it as we descended from a climb of the central north ridge (that was 5 - 7 pitches with the hardest around 5.7 - 5.8 R).

5-7 pitches on Ladron ?
Wow, last time I was hiking out there it looked to be short one pitch stuff. Is this the faces on the N side ?

Hello Paul:

I'll start another thread about Ladron Peak to avoid hijacking this one.
