Hi. I am moving to spokane in about a month and was wondering where there is good alpine climbing. if anybody knows please write a reply. thanks

also i would like to find someone who has a rack so i can get some trad climbing in since my mom wont let me buy one

Also if someone does any ice climbing, i need someone to teach me how to place screws so my mom feels comfortable. I have read up and have had someone tell me the basics but my mom wants a reputable person to ensure her that i am doing it right. thankyou

Another favourite climbing quote. A woman at Lake Louise asks "so do you need to be a professional to get all that gear up there?" Random climber jumps out of the woods and replies "No m'am, there's nothing professional about it.

I don't live in Spokane, but check out the Bozeman Ice Festival in December. You'll have to go to Bozeman, but it's an awesome town and the festival has lots of useful clinics. Good option if you can't get anyone to take you ice climbing by then, and cheaper than a guide.

I am wrapping up 9 months here in Spokane so hopefully I can offer some advice.
Best alpine climbing: selkirks of northern idaho or the cabinets of NW Montana.

Best ice climbing: didn't do too much this year except for one trip out to bozeman/hyalite, which is world class.

Best backcountry skiing: around lookout pass

Best cragging: post falls and rocks of sharon.

These are of course, just my opinion. If you need more info let me know.

Jake, as Kevin mentioned the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains are about the only close alpine climbing (close being relative... 2-3 hrs driving). There is also alpine climbing down in the Bitterroot Mts. Leavenworth and Washington Pass are only 3 1/2 to 4 hrs too. I don't know of any climbs in the Selkirks longer than 5 pitches and with the exception of Chimney Rock there aren't a lot of big walls with multiple climbs all in a row. I haven't climbed in the Cabinets so don't know much about routes, but the Bitterroots have some pretty sweet climbing in them...check out Blodgett Canyon.

Locally there are more options, Post Falls, Minnehaha, Rocks of Sharon, Deep Creek, McLellan Rocks, and Tum Tum. Each place has a different flavor and feel to it. I am part of the Spokane mountaineers and we have informal climbing evenings at both Minne and Post Falls. Anybody is welcome to come on out and climb and it is a great way to meet lots of other locals. I would be happy to take you out too if we can make our schedules match up. Anyway welcome to Spokane!

Thank you. I have gotten to climb at post falls and minnehaha and was about to go to rocks of Sharon but broke my foot in an ice hockey accident. I will try the selkirks and the cabinets. Thanks for the info.

Marlin, I am also part of the mountaineers and climb constantly with the Keenes. I don't know if you know them but They are great people.

Jake, good you hear you have been out climbing. I am not familiar with the Keenes; it is a big group. Well I hope you heal up quick. Are you taking the Ice climbing seminar this winter through the Mountaineers?

Dood, I am not a member of the mountaineers but I do a lot of alpine rock in the cascades and north cascades (best around here in my opinion), allways looking for new partners to climb with. Also, if you haven't climbed at Dishman check that out, really fun and steep sport routes with a gear climb or two thrown in.
