Seeking advice from wall rats on hauling past a knot.

When hauling and two ropes are tied together what is your preferred method to pass the knot?

Depends on the anchor configuration and what gear you have.

Here are a couple basic methods:

Haul to just shy of the knot, then mini-haul off a higher piece (to unweight the hauling device and get enough slack to pass the knot), tie/prussik/munter-mule/etc the bag off to that higher piece, move the knot past the device, lower the bag back to where it's weighting the hauling device, continue hauling.

or

Haul to just shy of knot, place second hauling device below knot (also is below original device), slightly lower bag and open cam on original hauling device to weight second device, remove/open cam/ratchet on original device, continue hauling on second device

Mini haul to unweight the device can be done with almost anything, you don't need to raise the bag much. Couple slings through a biner, a cordolette, etc will work.

There just happens to be a Better Way.

Get your 2:1 hauling ratchet, that is pre-rigged with a zed-cord around 15' in length, that you usually keep shortened to around four or five feet during hauling.

Let out the knot you use to shorten it, and extend it to full length. Put the inverted ascender on the rope something in the order of 7' or so below the knot.

Put both your jugs on the zed-cord and jug it. As you do, the knot will rise and slack will go into the haul line at the knot.

Quickly and easily, open your 1:1 hauling device and pass the knot through.

Voila.

Remember to tie a backup knot upstream in the haul line before you do this, in order to back up the zed-cord during lifting.
