Ripped zipper, where to send tent to get repaired?

I have a three person REI tent I got as a gift about 4 years ago. It's in great shape except one of the main door zippers busted out completely leaving the door permanently open.

Where is the best place in Los Angeles to get it repaired locally?

OR, where is a good place to ship it to to get fixed?

It's a great car camping tent and summer climbing season in Yosemite and Tuolumne is just around the corner.

How about REI?

I cannot return it as I didn't buy it with my membership card.

Are you saying REI offers tent repair?

Give it a try... takes 5 minutes.

That should not matter. As long as you bought it at REI, they will likely either repair it or replace it.

If that fails though, you can get just about any gear repair done at Rip Stop Repair in Boulder (see link below):

I had a Sierra Designs tent with a jacked up zipper. They fixed it no charge. Good company.

I'd be interested to know if REI does the same. Wouldn't surprise me either way.

While this would probably be the case for other gear, I don't think you'd have a problem with an REI-branded item which was obviously purchased from REI. I'd be very surprised if they don't offer to fix/replace it for you.

I was lucky to find a local seamstress,,someone who usually worked on curtains and other fabrics or custom made dresses, etc. They were all excited about the challenge of doing something different like installing a new waterproof floor to my tent, new zippers in sleeping bags, fixing a down jacket, etc. All for resonable prices. The only drawback was that they were total smokers and most stuff came back smelling like cigarettes throughout, thus needed a good airing out or cleaning after the fix.

REI will also repair some of their stuff. I contacted them a while back about repairing a GeoMountain 3, which I received as a gift, and they gave me the name of their preferred people. I don't have time to look it up, but the short version is "contact REI".

My new punk band name came from this thread. thanks.

I'd send it to REI for repairs as others have suggested, or call them and ask if they have a suggestion.

I took in an REI tent with a ripped zipper once. They wanted to repair it... then said it would take 8-12 weeks. That's a long time have no tent.

Play hardball. If it is an REI tent, they can't say you didn't get it there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
