This guy's newest video. It's not from an arch, but I'm sure the ethics of it will still be debated. |

they jumped tandem at the same time at the end, too. damn that's scary to me. |

It's a gyrocopter (basically a drone) with a camera on it. And for the record (not that it matters, the flaming will commence anyway) but the bolts were all already there and the area has been used for highlining and swinging for years. |

Rigging lines on a large cliff?Yeah, they used a remote control helicopter. The specifics are in the Behind the Scenes Video. Also, didn't Andy Lewis do a rope swing in this same canyon? I know he did a similar huge one in a similar looking slot canyon. |

Mo - I actually set the first video up (the Corona Arch swing). My brother is the one at the beginning of the new video (with the bow and arrow) and everyone in it are either friends or old roommates. I got trapped in northern Utah when they filmed this one; I wasn't happy to miss it. Making the videos would be pretty expensive but Devin (the guy who makes the videos) has a pretty big following. People either sponsor his videos or just let him use their products (like the gyrocopter) for the publicity. Sometimes, if we play it right, we can get companies to spring for a houseboat in Lake Powell or something similarly ridiculous. You'd be surprised at the number of dollars that get thrown at Youtube videos. |

Looks fun and all, not gonna comment on the music. |

Here's a little behind the scenes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpCxIL3r5dM&list=UUzofNVHFCdD_4Jxs5dVqtAA&index=2 |

Is anybody surprised? Not me. |

I saw this story this morning as well. Second death in Moab in two weeks. This made me think about how one would you get down once you stopped swinging. I haven't given it a ton of thought but a releasable knot at the harness would be most likely but the word releasable and jumping off an arch don't seem compatible. |

Regardless, condolences. Two options: guy at the top throws a rappel line down and you transition to that OR you rig the jumping rope with a grigri and then just lower the jumper. The second option is more complicated but way faster. |

I have been rigging my own rope jumps for several years now. This activity is like any extreme sport. You have to have a lot of experience and know how to pull it off. That doesnt mean it isnt still dangerous and it doesnt mean we need to make it illegal. Rock climbing is dangerous, can lead to sever injury or death if it attempted by someone who is inexperienced or doesnt understand the finer points of the gear and planning. BASE jumping even more so. Id hate to see some kind of legal fallout occur over this. I for one am not going to stop jumping I absolutely love it
nor will I stop throwing a test bag off first to ensure my system is rigged correctly. |
