Im living in Western NC right now and have been looking at a trip to the Bugaboos. My brother lives in Billings MT right now but is in the process of moving to Bozeman MT. I was wondering if there are many big routes in the 5.6-5.8 range out there? Im not opposed to some aid but I was more interested in mostly free. I know the mountains are big out there, especially in comparison to our here in NC but I havent had much luck in my searches here on MP.
try this woodandironworks.com/bearto… also there is an alpine climbing guide that was published recently, available at local shops but I can't find it online, sorry.
you'll have to wait until summer but the NE ridge of Cowen fits your bill. It's an hour and change drive from bozeman and then a short 9 mile hike in. 2 day trip, but could easily spend a week without getting bored.
Near Bozeman you could do the standard route up Gallatin tower, at three pitches it's not exactly a big wall, but it is conveniently located right next to the road. mountainproject.com/v/stand… located @ 45.416881,-111.234063
Also in Gallatin Canyon (just across the road from the tower) is "Skyline Arete" a great 5 or 6 pitch 5.6 route, the MP beta isn't the greatest but it's in the Vassilopoulos guide mountainproject.com/v/skyli… located @ 45.418591,-111.228152
Near Billings there is a bunch of towers in the Beartooths, most of which are a bit harder than 5.8. But "The Ramp" is a great 4 or 5 pitch route. It is called "Rosina Tower" on the excellent Wood & Iron works site mentioned by Dan Bachan mountainproject.com/v/the-r… located @ 45.221362,-109.631239

This is the same route that I had in mind. Just be sure to stay close the the ridge. The face is kinda gross. This route would be good pretty much anytime the Bugaboos have good weather.
