Sometimes you got to break your own rules. My dogs have never been ornaments. They are family companions and working bird dogs. They need a purpose. Name them something that, as said before, has a meaning for you and that they'll respond to. So simpler is better in my mind. A dog which doesn't respond to it's name and more importantly it's owner, can be a dead dog in a bad situation. Nobody wants that.

Buddy, wow!! 2 syllables, I stand corrected!!

I named my dog Beazy. Short for 'be easy', which was something we said (and smoked) in college. He has learned "smoke a bowl" when he needs to lay down and chill out..

I always thought it would be funny to name a dog Sickem.

Out walking the dog, off leash of course... Sick'Em, Sick'Em!!

My dog's name is Ruy, which is a common Portuguese name. I was told it's pronounced Hroo-ee so I've always slanged it to "hoo" or "hoo-dog" (he answers to both).

If my next dog is female I've already picked out Lulubelle or Loo for short.

This is the coolest dog I have ever met. Toast! He has summited several snowy glaciated peaks in the Cordillera Blanca . Here is his write up on Skyline Adventures website.

Toast the Wonder Mutt - Camp Guard, Great Companion

Toast was born in a small cardboard box in the Huaraz Central Market with several other less-cute-than-he black puppies. He joined the Skyline family at the ripe young age of 5 weeks and has been both an asset and a joy ever since. Toast has worked in several different capacities within the Skyline Adventure School, serving primarily as a good buddy, but also in security, couch warming, stick gathering, and is pushing the limits of high altitude canine alpine camp guarding!

Nugget
We used to joke about hippy show kids with dogs with names like Nugget.
At crags we would start calling my partner's dogs Nugget.

Its not funny unless you say it like a lost angry loud hippy with a lost dog.
"HERE NUGGET, WHERE ARE YOU NUGGET?! DAMMIT NUGGET GET OFF THAT ROPE NUGGET! ANYONE SEEN MY NUGGETS?!"

I can't remember the instance, but I think the joke started out based on witnessing some hippy kid and his dog nugget (that he was screaming for all day).
