My wife and I are soon getting a dog who will be part of our climbing family, and were trying to think of the best name for him, so far we came up with Sherpa, and Icarus. If you have heard of any clever or interesting dog names let me know.

Cheers,

Danger-Russ

I think this has been covered before, Choss being one of my favorites i've heard. Any climbing term can be a good name if you really want it to. 'Biner, Quickdraw, Flake, Huck, Cam, Slot, Stopper... if it means something to you you'll like it. One thing i'd like to see all climbers train their dog with is to have "Belay On!" or "On Belay" be the command to go lie down. Dogs at the crag will be ten times cooler.

The person who wrote the Boise Climbs book (Sandy Epeldi) has a dog named "Whipper".

"Dude 'Biner just dumped a load. Smelly-ass 'Biner."

Dogs names should be mono-syllable. Anything else is confusing for the dog and annoying as hell to people.

I have a friend whose little girl named their new puppy "Stain" because he had markings that reminded her of a stain on their floor left by their recently departed dog.

Guess they got used to the name before they had to call it to come in.

For God's sake don't name your freaking dog Zion, or Denali. Anything, but those two overly done "Hey look at me I'm all about the outdoors" lame ass names.

Name your dog jarthur, seems like it would be pretty awesome.

You should DEFINITELY name it something marijuana-related. Chronic, Token (get it?!), or maybe Marley. This way everyone knows that not only are you a climber, but you're also slightly rebellious and TOTALLY counter-culture.

To add to the naming "rules".
1. Should not be a human name - no "Fred's".
2. Should be a real word.
3. Should have some significance to the owner(s) - something to do with their life style.
4. Should describe a characteristic - physical or behavioral - of the dog.

the dog I had for 13 years - best dog in the world - was named "Flash" - as an extra part to #3 my wife is a pretty serious photographer.

Wow, these last posts are IQ subtractors for sure. I want my last 10 seconds back!

The best dog name I've heard in a while was George Henry. That's a formal fucking pooch, if you ask me.

I want to name my dog "TAKE." :)

"Ewok" would have worked for her too Hank. ;)

If my daughter saw that, she would freak the hell out and probably faint from cute overload syndrome.

So far I think Whipper is pretty cool, and I don't personally subscribe to any hard and fast naming rules (and I would never name my dog Zion, or Denali)

+1 What my exgirlfriends dog thought her name was.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
