Looking for trad climbing coach!

Hey I'm really interested in trying out trad climbing. I've been eyeing some cracks up little cottonwood. If anyone is willing to bring along a novice trad climber, it'd be much appreciated.
I've got all the general sport climbing gear, etc.
Thanks!
Daniel

Get some hexes and use them when you get scared.

If you are set on Little Cottonwood, no can do. I live 30 minutes North of the City of Rocks. For $50 I'd give you a fine tour of the City, and show you how to place and clean as well as belay you all Saturday. I've got all the gear you'd need. I even have some for sale.

i live in SLC and climb all the time in LCC and wouldn't mind showing you some things. It's always nice to have more partners. Send me a PM.

kevin,
Smart enough to know not to include (at) and (dot) so your email address isn't collected by bots but not enough to know that taking money for a "tour" around the City which is federal land is guiding without a permit.
On BLM land, which I know the city is not, the fine can be up to $100,000 and 12 months in jail on NFS land it can be $10,000 and 5 years in jail.
Be careful out there and ask for more $$$.

Interesting.
CDEC, I am sure you would like to share with us where you obtained this information. A Department of Interior web page will suffice.

NPS ranger,
As a permittee of the DOI I have a bit of an idea about fines and pirating. From the DOI, Utah.
The Consequences of Operating Without a Permit
Operating without a required SRP or participating in a non-permitted event or activity that requires a SRP is a Federal Class A criminal misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 and 12 months incarceration.

Here's the whole doc as you requested. Check out page 5.
blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib…

As for the NFS fines I'll let you operate the Google machine and find the info I did. I am sure penalties vary as does everything pertaining to the management of our public lands.
I couldn't find any information about operating without a permit in a National Park but I am fairly sure that it would be similar. Perhaps you can shed some light?

I thought this thread was about a trad climbing coach.

Change it to : a n00b eager to belay an experienced trad leader on moderates of his(the leader's) choice will provide with gas cash (and/or ride), lunch (and or Booz) and unlimited belay for a willing mentor. .....that may get u some luck!

Why is it that people think you have to say something smart and witty on a forum? Is it possibly because it gives them time to come up with good comebacks? Just a thought... All I wanted was to get someone to teach me to place cams and stuff haha, everyone has to begin sometime, right? This is atleast a month old,, I'm over it. Let's move on everyone!

this is not smart this is the reality. To teach somebody how to trad especially if they have no gear is a huge thing. Time investment is immense! Optimally u will end up with a couple of mentors and hopefully it will develop into a strong partnership. Best of luck . I did not mean to be smart.

Daniel,
Sorry for muddying your thread. I go climb with you.
Been placing gear and climbing in the cottonwoods for 14 years and I don't want a dime.
PM me. We can chat and you decide.

No worries! And I get it, my brother and I have done a few 5.6-58's in LCC. But it feels really slow going, so climbing with an experienced trad climber would be such a help I think. Thanks cdec, I'll send you a PM. Also we've got a set of friends, a c4 .4, and and a Trango flex and like thirty nuts, and nut tool.

@ CDEC,
Thank you for sharing that information. $100K seemed extremely high, and more like an exageration than fact. I appreciate you sharing, and being accurate.
Also, Big Kudos on your offer to Mr. Hanks. You will be a great mentor and partner.
Happy climbing.

Daniel, couldn't agree more about people always needing to say something smartass in these forums. Rule 1: don't be a jerk. I check the wasatch forums everyday but lately it's just filled with garbage, people being assholes to each other. Maybe somebody should create a constructive thread that actually has something to do with climbing in the wasatch?

That's my rant. Hope some people agree with me.

Also, a lot of the time the posts on this site come from obvious n00bs. "I lost a draw can someone give it back" or "teach me to climb". Maybe more people should steer these newcomers in a welcoming direction instead of just trying to say something witty to let them know how much more experience you have than them.
