Reason to carry an over the shoulder length runner, just to clean up this placement a bit. I see it as excellent directional for the rope, to guide you on level ground to make correct turns back to camp to sober up.

Seriously?

The real problem is it's not clipped to the rope. Configured like that - it will not pull the pine out. Good to go!

(carabiner-to-carabiner, girth hitched quick draw, clipping to that twig...yeah, solid)

On a serious note - I have always clipped draw on draw using the webbing not metal to metal but I never had a solid rational for why... what's the explanation for this? easyier to become unclipped with biner on biner?

You mean that isn't an indoor pine tree? Well that throws off all my logic now....guess I'll have to reconsider this placement.

Really? Guess there are no qualifications to be a mod on a climbing site...

That pro sucks, but I admit I have placed worse.

That's true, but it's more that carabiners aren't strong in shear, so if two twist against each other they can break. It's the same reason you should be careful not to load one over an edge.

I think the fretting about clipping biner-to-biner is exaggerated, but it's true it's not a good idea.

Go easy on the sport climber!

For the angle of the rock, that pine sprig looks just about perfect.

I was actually thinking the same thing last night watching that "faster transitions" video. He has the masterpoint biner, then clips the autoblock biner onto that. I've always avoided the metal on metal, ie autoblocking right off the masterpoint.

But like Morgan said, never had the solid answer why, I just observed the practice. I just figured it had something to do with overall wear.

How do you clip bolts?

Biner-to-biner is fine if they're locking - non lockers can twist and unclip themselves easily.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
