Ice Climber Falls to His Death in Provo Canyon

An ice climber fell to his death this morning near Bridal Veil Falls.

It's a tragic day for ice climbers, after a man died late this morning, after falling more than 200 feet to his death.

The man was ice climbing in Provo Canyon, just west of Bridal Veil Falls in an area known ironically as the stairway to heaven.

It is still not known whether there was an equipment malfunction or the ice was not strong enough, but we do know that the man fell from the second tier of ice down to the third tier of ice.

There were two other ice climbers in the area who called for help, but before they reached him, the victim had died from extensive head injuries.

Dennis Harris, Utah County Sheriff's Office: "We're in the process right now of recovering. We do know that he was wearing protective head-gear, but ya know that's quite a fall also."

Right now, several members of the Utah County Search and Rescue are on the mountain recovering the victim's body. It is a dangerous situation, but something that searchers here are well trained at doing.

So far, the victim's name has not been released. Police are not sure if he is from Utah.

Provo Canyon is known around the world for ice-climbing. It is a very popular place because that area is very steep, where there is water coming from the falls and it is also shaded from the sun during the entire winter.

I knew the climber very well he was a friend and great climber with absolutely no fear. He will be greatly missed.

It was Chris Hunnicutt from Arizona. He had moved here to Utah.

My condolences go out to everyone in the community that knew this gentleman, as well as to his friends and family.

I really hoped that this is was not the Chris Hunnicutt who used to live in Tucson and worked at Summit Hut, but I just talked to the folks at the Summit Hut and it was him.

We worked together for a while and he was hands down one of the nicest and most badass guys I know. He will be missed deeply by all who knew him.

It has been a hard year losing good people in our community.

The BD and other tributes and memories present a man with a beautiful soul. I suspect they mean alot to those who knew Chris. Having experienced deaths, I'm touched by them, even though I didn't know him. When someone dies in the areas you love, there is a collective sadness and sympathy for those who loved and cared about him and will miss him terribly.

My name is Steve and I'm from Tucson. I don't know any of you and I'm not a climber, but my wife's best friend Susan was close friends with Chris. Maybe some of you know her since she's an avid climber in the Tucson area.

Chris was a cool guy and I only knew him for a short time. I guess my only momory of him was one night at a party, we were playing Curses and he got stuck with about eight curses and was able to pull all of them off for most of the game.

Anyway, below is a picture of Chris at our wedding on 11/05/06. He had his video camera at our wedding and was in the middle of working on making a wedding DVD for us as a gift.

UA grad dies ice climbing in Utah

A University of Arizona graduate and avid rock climber died Jan. 30 in an ice-climbing accident in Provo Canyon, Utah.Christopher Hunnicutt, 32, left Tucson last April to move to Salt Lake City where he worked for Black Diamond Equipment Ltd. as a regional sales representative.The move followed several years of working at Summit Hut, an outdoor-equipment store on East Speedway near North Rosemont Boulevard, said General Manager Dana Davis.

Hunnicutt had gone climbing with a friend south of Salt Lake City when he lost his footing, according to a statement posted on the Black Diamond Web site. He struck a ledge and was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said. Hunnicutt became interested in rock climbing while attending an Outward Bound program in high school in Arlington, Va. He would go on to earn a bachelor's degree in 2000 in media arts from the University of Arizona and was much loved at the Summit Hut store on Speedway where he shared his knowledge of rock climbing with customers and co-workers.

"Chris was a great guy with a wonderful smile and a great energy towards climbing and the outdoors," Davis said. "He was a safe, talented and knowledgeable climber and what happened was nothing more than a tragic accident."

Added Hunnicutt's father, Robert Hunnicutt: "He was a beautiful, caring man. He was a well-respected climber and he touched so many lives in Tucson and Salt Lake City."

Summit Hut will hold a memorial service for Hunnicutt Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. at Windy Point on Mount Lemmon. The service is open to the public.

Hunnicutt is survived by his brother, Paul, of Boulder, Colo.; and his parents, Robert and June Hunnicutt, of McLean, Va.
