What does your Woody look like???

T-nuts....as many per board as you can. they don't cost much and why be missing one when needed? 35 minimum per 4 by 8 sheet of plywood. 40 or so is better, offers more variety. And don't place them in a square pattern, make it random, scattered. 7/16 drill for hole, 3/8is too tight a hole for nut to fit easily.

Those kids will be climbing 5.13 in no time with that beast to train on! Awesome wall.

In my opinion this greatly increases the resale price of the house, but I think a realtor might think otherwise.

Old thread I know but I thought I'd share. I built this in October
It's not much, but it's more than the finger board I used to have. It's free standing, tilted at 15 deg, and the base was built to add on at least one other side. I dry tool on some holds, I also have ring bolts to supplement that. I aquired some foam ice panels and cut one into 8"x8" squares and bolted them up. They work great actually. Too shallow a strike, they pop, too deep, the cleaning sucks. Adds a funky element to it.

Finally got my woody completed and we're been holding Thursday night climbing/setting sessions on it for a month now. I'm loving it!

Woody is finally done!

Question for those who built theirs outdoors.
did you use pressure treated plywood or did you finish it with a water resistant coating?

Woodchuck ATC · · Unknown Hometown · Joined Nov 2007 · Points: 3,280

Indoors I used the cheapest CDX I could get. Definately always 3/4 inch thick. Outdoors I always used pressure treated boards so they won't rot out. Thompsons Waterproofing sloshed on the boards probably did some good on the few I did use outside. One full board finally rotted through this past season, after 16 years of weather!

I had an outside styrofoam ice addition up for several years; just took it down this fall. Also built one indoors at a gym(which is now closed). Couple pics posted of the indoor one on earlier pages in this post....here's a couple more old pics from last year.
We used dense foam and those Ice Holdz for the climbs. Vertical, only 20 ft up but it was good practice.

Peter Franzen wrote:Also, a question for hangboarders: Does anyone know of an iPhone app that can do consecutive timer intervals of different durationss? For example, I'd love to have an app that can do: 15 sec. 30 sec. 15 sec. 30 sec. ...back-to-back. Or a more extensive list of times that automatically count down as each interval finishes, such as: 7 sec 3 sec 7 sec 3 sec 7 sec 3 sec 2 minutes (repeat) I'd love to be able to program an entire workout's worth of intervals and have it just go on its own with no further interaction needed once it has started. Anybody know of something that can do this?
Use "Seconds Pro" from the iTunes Store. I think its 2.99. You might have to fool with it a tiny bit to figure out what you want it to do, but it will do it. Its very, very slick and flexible. I coach the youth at our gym, and I use it for Tabata intervals, I also use it for intervals on my indoor bike trainer. My wife uses it for running intervals, etc. I can't imagine that there's not an interval set that you can't program.

That's fantastic! It is exactly what I was looking for, and I programmed in Ryan's killer hangboard workout of Doom (with over 300 intervals) easily.

Thanks for finding this!

IN SUMMARY as of Feb.28th, 2012. This post has been running for over 2 years and still amazing wood walls are going up and being posted. Last night I took the time to go back and review all previous 8 pages and then pick out my favorites. Voting for your favorite is OK, or just give us a list of what you think is pretty cool. Working backwards from page 8, I like Kevin's ice shapes and David's 14 by 14 free standing wall. Page 7 it's Seth's dungeon' steeps that caught my eye. Pg 6 I like Kachoong's tall Texas wall, and David's big garage wall. Page 5 is Thinayr's garage. Pg 4 it's Chris Jones 12' yard tower. Pg 3; how could I ignore Steve's pole dancing partner! Also my top favorite of all is the massive climbing cave that Tony Vavricka has up. Pg 2; I like jj Helstrom's wall from Dayton. Well those are my favorites,,,,go back and check them out or find those that you think are spectacular. Lots of great workout boards and mini-woodies with unique shape or design. Hope we keep seeing more posted here when the construction season begins for us again.

My woody is going up as soon as one of my friends has time to help me with the construction, possibly as early as Friday although if not it may wait until later in March. It's going to be pretty simple since it has to fit in my studio apartment but it's going to be an 8x8 panel at 40 degrees overhanging finishing with a 4x8 roof. My bed will go underneath and double as a crash pad. Should make for some good training and I'm getting excited!

Nice way to wake up in the AM to get started with a few climbs before breakfast.

New Climbing Wall

New Climbing Wall

So the Divorce Ferry came and took away the wall i posted pics of on Page 7 of this thread. I took the ply wood from the garage, moved it into my mom's old barn, and created this beast. It may be short-lived, as the structural integrity of the barn is questionable and i didn't exactly realize this until I had the wall built, but i'm using it til i figure out how much of an issue (i.e. how expensive) it'll be to make the barn safe for the foreseeable future. I'll say this, if i have to rip this thing down I think i'm taking a break from home walls for a bit.

It's 12 feet high and 14 feet wide with a 45 and a 60(ish) on top of a 6 foot vert wall. This makes for about 18ft of climbing on the 45 and 15ft on the 60. Because of the dimensions, sharp angles, and size of the wall the problems climb more like routes. It's fugging fun. If i can save it i'm going to add a transitional angle between the 45 and the 60, but for now i've been able to set some really cool compression moves on the arete. Sure hope it works out that i can keep it.

Outstanding! Man I should build something like that in our local trail system.
