Bryan, I'm quite certain I saw that same truck you are talking about because my partner and I commented about it. Sorry about your gear. I'll keep my eye out for that truck because I'm out there a fair bit as well.

Anyone have glenwood canyon conditions?

Teigon S. · · Unknown Hometown · Joined Apr 2011 · Points: 50

Going to SILVERPLUME this Friday with a considerable group. We will do our best to share if you decide to come, but last week the ice was on the thin side so you may want to venture elsewhere if you are looking for solitude. Much thanks!

Has Stairway to Heaven or any other climbs in Eureaka slid since last weekend? I'm planning on going up there this weekend with a crew, but the snowpack seems questionable.

Hidden falls is in real nice, or at least it was two weeks ago. First pitch is real good on the left side, the right is really dirty. Can't speak to Glenwood Falls though.

That's a dangerous thought process for Eureka or anywhere. The climbs up there will run naturally after a storm but that does not mean that they can't run again. You need to also be looking at what the wind is doing in that area. The tops of most of the climbs in Eureka have bowls which that have aspects ranging from all directions which make them dangerous. Remember snow can be transported very easily with as little 12mph worth of wind. That means those bowls get loaded very quickly.

We did end up with new snow as well overnight so things will likely run again within the next few days. The snow totals are pretty low in the northern San Juan but expect lots of transport/drifting with the wind speeds that are expected up high.

Be safe!

Anyone know the condition of Hessie?

Colin Simon · · Boulder, CO · Joined Jan 2009 · Points: 370

Looking to do a moderate couloir like Martha on Tues or Weds.

Should I expect dangerous avy conditions on Martha? Fairly inexperienced with that.

hessie chimney report:

according to my friend mr. lowe, who went ski touring by there...

there was like 6inches of ice here, and maybe 12inches up higher.

(sounds like it is pretty dry) :(

Actually sounds fat for Hessie. Thanks Cor.

Martha itself isn't too dangerous, maybe the first snow pitch. There is also a possibility for poor avy conditions on the traverse from Chasm junction. The whole area has been hammered by wind pretty hard so I would think avy conditions wouldn't be too big of a problem.

Looked like crap yesterday driving by. Not much ice at all, sunbaked as usual. Bad year for silverplume it seems.

Oh but I did see two guys climbing the illegal roadside falls right before Silverplume on Friday. Didn't even try to back their car in all the way. :o(

I skied by Hessie yesterday. There is a wet streak but virtually no ice on the first pitch. The 2nd pitch, left variation, looked completely dry. I wouldn't waste my time... I did see a big blue ice blob, about 100 feet high, at timberline on the south face of Baldy, above the Arapaho Pass trail. Probably take all day to get to it but it looked pretty in the sun....

Hey Colin, if you wouldn't mind, can you post conditions if you climb Martha this week? Might be interested in climbing that over the weekend. Thanks.

Martha had fairly little ice, with a bunch of snow in the usual places. Still a bunch of fun moderate mixed.

The cruxy bit at the top had a little ice and took a screw in one spot.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
