Cloudveil Jacket and a Das Parka competitor

I'm looking at a Cloudveil Down Patrol (hooded) Jacket. I have the opportunity to get it at a good price, but can't put hands on it before committing to the purchase.

My thoughts are I would use it in place of my old MH Sub Zero SL, so consider the conditions/temps for the MH use the same as where I would like to use the Cloudveil. Just looking for suggestions/opinions on if the Cloudveil is a suitable replacement for those same level of conditions.

Also, I'm looking at getting a Patagonia Das Parka for when the rain/snow drives something other than down or down w/a shell. Any recommendations for a direct competitor to the Das for consideration? My thoughts are a Wild Things belay jacket if I can get my hands on one.

Thanks!

Cheers,

Mike

Can't help with the Cloudveil question.

DAS Parka is the standard, but here are some other options:

montbell.us/products/disp.p…

us.rab.uk.com/products/mens…

http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN/Mens/Jackets/Dually-Belay-Parka#Insulated_Shell

DAS is more durable than the Mont Bell

I've been unimpressed with cloudveil since they were bought out. Of the two I'd opt for the DAS if its sight unseen. Otherwise I'd like at a different brand of down jacket.

since price seems a concern; options:
departmentofgoods.com/mens-…

sierratradingpost.com/s/men…

try these various coupon codes (keycodes) at STP: PBP49731 45% off limited example sierratradingpost.com/marmo… yes its XL only and ugly, but its down to $125

FWV89289 30% off less limited

or fatwallet.com/Sierra-Tradin…

sign up for the deal flyer and you should get 25% off basically anything

I have a montbell flatiron belay jacket that I never use and is just taking up closet space, I could part with it for pretty cheap. It is size med and is a little lighter then the DAS parka.

Ben, thanks for the offer- but at almost 6' and 200lbs I probably need a large.

First time I have seen that jacket though.

I've got the Montbell Flatiron parka (same as their new 'thermawrap guide'). Love it. Haven't tried the DAS though, so I don't know how it compares.

The DAS is an insulated garbage bag, of the two you listed the Wild Things Belay jacket is much better. If you can go with a somewhat lighter option than those, the Arc'teryx Atom SV is your ticket.

The Mammut Stratus Hooded Jacket retails for $220 and is warmer than a DAS. Probably a little heavier.

Love mine. My buddies have the DAS, they prefer my jacket too.

It also seems to hold up better.

I saw the Cloudveil at TJMaxx's for $70 bucks. I considered buying it as a belay jacket myself just because it was so cheap. I grabbed a pack in the store and tried stuffing it. It took up a huge amount of room despite being down since the fabric is stiffer and more burly than the DAS. If space in your pack is a concern that's something to think about.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
