Is it easy to pirate camp here. If I show up here late, and leave early, will I get any kind of a ticket or ranger warning or anything? I just need to crash here for one night.

Not a good idea. Of all the parks in California that one is very concerned with getting paid. And its a small donation for an amazing place, just pay and enjoy the view and good karma.

Make sure you have a backcountry permit that begins the following day or ends on the evening you want to stay there. They do check, but they generally won't wake anyone up to do it.

Ok, the plan is that I will be showing up around 10 or 11pm, and leaving around 6 or 7 in the morning to get in line for camp 4 for saturday. I don't mind paying, but I don't have a back country permit for the next day. Also, where do you park so you don't get a ticket?

are you alone ? why not just walk into the trees a few hundred feet and bivy , people been doing it for generations .

I think your safest bet is to bivy at El Portal. it only takes like 15-20 minutes to get to camp 4 from there and there is zero chance of getting caught by a park ranger and further decreasing their respect for climbers like us.

Yeah, if you're arriving in the park that night, might as well just sleep outside the Valley.

Agree, stay outside the park. Also, 6 or 7 may not be early enough to get a spot in Camp 4 on a Saturday.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
