In Alaska they would say- " the pistol is to shoot yourself while the bear eats you" Maybe you could get a "Captain Moose" out there- yummy

Any bears I have seen in the years out at Owls or on the way to and from Greens have been extremely skittish and run away or treed as fast as they can. I have never had a problem with them and I used to hike into Owls in the middle of the night with steaks in the top of my pack all the time. I can't see any reason to carry the extra weight of a 9 mil, maybe some bear spray if you are really paranoid. It makes a picture though.
About a year ago Jon and Lincoln were out at the captain getting ready to put up their new route. jay and i got the crazy idea to hike out to the campsite were they were sleeping and scare the living shit out of them. we got to the campsite around 930 at night and they were sound a sleep. we started making all kinds of noise. now remember the captain is a long way from any roads so the last thing they were expecting is someone out there fucking with them.we had them so scared they thought they were going to die. after we f around with them for a while, we shook their tent an ran out of there, they had no clue until a few day later. let's just say they were mad for a while. so after that they started to carry the 9 mil just in case. it's nice to have if you want to give a warning shot off in the middle of the night. just so people know we would never shoot any animals with it. i posted the photo just for laughs.
