Housing around Boulder/Denver

With a little bit of luck I'll be moving around the end of August to start a new job Sept 1st in Broomfield. My fiance will most likely be working at a hospital in Denver. We like Boulder but would prefer Louisville as it seemed a little more quiet. How is Broomfield? We're looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment that is dog friendly (1) with no breed restrictions. Looking to stay around $1000/mo +/- Any advice would be appreciated.

South Boulder neighborhoods like Table Mesa and Martin Acres are quiet, but rents probably at top end or above your range unless you find a killer deal. Louisville and Lafayette are quiet, comfortable communities where you can hangout on days off and enjoy the hometown culture with no need to leave. They offer quick access to Boulder, Eldo and beyond, as well as Denver. Broomfield has always struck me as a suburban wasteland.

What's the average price for a decent 1b/1b apartment that allows dogs in that area? Basically we've decided we're moving no matter what, if I get my job we'll be much better off and will only be renting for a short period before we find a place to buy, but if I don't I'm going back to school and we'll have to live on the cheap for a few years.

Ideally I'd like to be close to (within 60min) Estes and Eldo and pay around $1000 for housing. Does anything like that exist without living in a dump?

That should be entirely possible, I'm in Boulder and pay less than $1000/month for a two bedroom...
It might not be the nicest place but I certainly wouldn't call it a dump.

Hey Nick,

I'm pretty sure I ran into you and your fiance on top of the Wind Tower.
Welcome to CO (when you get here)!

My wife and I live on the east side of Denver. It's a 40 minute drive to Eldo, about 1.5 h to Estes Park. We pay $795/mo for a large 2 level townhouse with 2 bedrooms and hardwood floors. If you're willing to drive for another half hour for your climbing, I bet you'll be able to find much cheaper/nicer housing options in and around Denver than near Boulder.

The drive from louisville to denver is going to be a pain in the ass unless she is already used to driving 45 min to and from work. And if there is traffic...plan on an hour+. I used to live in westminster and it was nice, a little too suburbia for my taste but if your looking to raise a family then it may fit. Try these sites, they helped my search before I settled in denver (north broadway). I'm prob 15-20 from broomfield.

Best bet is to come out here and get a hotel for a few nights and shop around. If you rent something online as i have done in the past you may get screwed with the worst apt in the complex. Good luck in your search!

Not really worried about the commute, living in Chicago now we're used to it taking an hour + to go 10-15 miles. Denver's rush hour was a dream. OReid that was us, it was good meeting you! I'll be out at least 3 more times if I stay in the process for my job so I should have more time to check out different areas before I commit to a lease. Sounds like you have a nice place for cheap and 45 minutes to great climbing would be a dream.

It's amazing how quickly 45 minutes becomes a drag, and you start looking for places 15 minutes away...

+1

Used to drive six hours to the New every weekend. Living in CO spoils you.

Hey Nick,

I am actually in the same boat as you are moving to the area and looking for a place around the same time. Unfortunately what I have found out is that this time frame is almost the worst time to move to the area due to college starting up. All that's pretty much on the market right now are really run-down student rentals and the occasional gem which always moves fast.

From what I've been told from family in the area is that there are a lot of good rentals that never get advertised online and don't rent to students. Maybe if you can visit the area and search around, you might find something perfect. That's what I plan on doing.

I think the point is you don't need to deal with a long commute in denver/boulder. If you want to live along 36, and are only going to rent for a year, pick whatever is reasonably priced and close to work. You'll be close to climbing either way, and you can use the year to try a bunch of climbing areas and figure out where you want to buy. 5 extra minutes to Eldo means 5 fewer minutes to South Platte, so don't sweat it too much.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
