Hey, are you really in London and in trouble and need money?

I really doubt it.

Smells like a scam to me.

Cheers.

Brian, for what it's worth I've had this exact setup happen to me through Facebook - and I probably wouldn't have commented if this didn't sound so similar. Anyways the story was this: a friend, who travels a lot, came online and said that she was in London with her family, that they had been robbed at their hotel and that they needed $ wired ASAP. Obviously I can't comment on the validity of your encounter but asking a few personal questions made things pretty clear...

Good luck.

No no, he's *totally* in trouble and needs your help! Fast! He told me that you can just send all the money to me though, then I'll send it along to him. Yeah, that's it...

I asked whoever has his email how he knew me. They said, "Mountain Project. I am a mountain climber."

Yeah. Whatever.

Here's the bait:

-Brian

How's everything on your end? This has had to come in a hurry and it has left me in a devastating state. I traveled to London,England for a volunteer Training Program (VTP), and unfortunately for me all my money and cellphone was stolen at the hotel where I lodged by robbers. The Embassy only cleared me of my traveling documents since I came in on unofficial purposes. The hotel telephone lines were disconnected during the robbery incident,so I have access to only emails.

Please can you lend me US$1,850 for me to settle the hotel bills and also get another flight ticket back home. As soon as i get home i would refund your money immediately.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and Regards
Braxton.

Is there any way to reach right into one of those emails and strangle the person on the other end?

A friend's grandmother got taken on a similar scam. I have a pretty low tolerance for that BS.

Good on ya for yankin' someone's chain!

That's awesome!

This has become an all-too-common scam lately.

If ever you get one of these spamsters from me --- I won't want money, I'd rather ammo.

No, I won't need a another gun, just more ammo, I'll shoot my own way out.

I got one of those emails from Braxton yesterday morning. I responded that I would send him 10k dollars. I then received another email with a Western Union address. I replied that I sent 10,000 dollars, and sent the MTCN # to his other email address. I then received angry response that I need to send the MTCN # to him. I haven't heard anything since then.

Also, (the real) Braxton's facebook page says he hasn't been able to log into his gmail account since yesterday.

The short answer is: yes, my gmail account was hijacked.

The long answer is: yes, some f*cking asshole hijacked my gmail account while I'm on vacation in Kalymnos and used it to try and scam people out of $1,850.

However, I have (finally) wrestled back control of my gmail account, which the hijacker so thoughtfully emptied (Inbox, Drafts, Trash, everything). I guess he/she/it didn't think it was enough to try and scam my friends/family out of $1,850, so they felt it necessary to delete all of my messages. I submitted a request to google to recover my lost email and it is currently 'in progress'.

I will add a detailed "trip write-up" regarding this shitstorm in the next day or so, when I have a moment. Hopefully my experience can be used to prevent something similar from happening to someone else.

Now we're off to Sikati cave!

Yeah, I got hacked too. Someone jacked my yahoo account. They even changed my password. Crazy.

They must have gone through those personal emails we shared, grk, and figured out of the goodness of their hearts, that you needed medical help. So young to have that happen. Has it effected your leader head?

Braxton, good to hear from you!

Guys,

I'm down here in Nicaragua and could really use $10,000 in small bills, 24 light assualt rifles, and at least two lawyers (one of whome knows international law and estate tax issues). OK? Right, you are awesome!

Now I want someone to try to scam me just so that I can pull this off!

Tim Stich · · Colorado Springs, Colorado · Joined Jan 2001 · Points: 1,520

Hey, I could use some cartons of cigarettes and some good Bic lighters down here in Nicaragua now. And some Mexican pre paid cell phones.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
