2011 climbing goals

I enjoyed creating goals for 2010 as part of last year's thread, so I thought I'd start a new one for this year.

This year I will:

  • maintain the injury prevention exercises I started in 2010 with the hopes of remaining injury free for 2011
  • continue doing yoga at least twice a week to improve my flexibility and core strenth
  • do enough sport climbing to be getting up low 5.12 after a few tries, and be comfortable falling off them while trying to learn the route
  • tick at least 3 classic 5.11 routes in Eldo (Naked Edge, Genesis, Vertigo, Center Route,...)
  • send Country Club from the ground in one pitch
  • climb the Diamond by any route

What are your goals? They can be a ticklist if that's how you work, or more general like some of mine.

First goal I can think of for myself.. is to climb 100 pitches of 5.10 climbing clean on lead.

I started thinking about this the past couple weeks, and here is my plan for a proud 2011:

  • Care more about the adventure than the grade
  • Two trips to climbing destinations where I've never been before
  • Get other people psyched about getting out
  • Start multipitch climbing as often as I can
  • Learn the basics of aid
  • Do a moderate big wall

And like Garrett said, care more about the adventure than the grade

Finish the fa's I started last year in LCC, including at least three multi-pitch lines and several single pitch lines.

Do the fa at Ibex I've been looking at (and Nose Shadow)
Take my daughter climbing outside once a week this summer and take her on an easy multi-pitch route.

Finish the three new boulder problems I'm trying to do at Ibex.

Do .13a gear and sport routes
Finish a .12b variation of a gear route I did last year
Finish my White Lines project. Rather, at least one of the three variations.

To not comment on MP anymore and its worthless Forums.

Damn, I already messed up and missed my goal. See what happens when you spray, you don't send!

Good luck with the lists kids!

I like the idea of writing down and sharing your goals with others, I think it makes you accountable to yourself and more likely to try hard. Here is my list, although most MPers will never have heard of any of these routes.

1. Redpoint the Soapstone Crack in the Sweetwater Rocks.

2. Finish my projects on the Strawberry Roan wall in the little Popo Agie canyon.

3. Try like hell to do the Plastic Shaman At the Sweatlodge (this one is reaching as the route is freaking hard) but probably settle for doing Ghost Dance.

4. Finish the multipitch I started about five years ago in Stough Creek Basin.

5. Get the hell out of Lander to climb more often. I get too complacent here.

I've been working on it for years, but she is sooo damn big I just haven't been able to send it:

Yo mama's so fat, she don't get a lint ball in her bellybutton, she get a damn quilt!

Yo mama's so fat, she put mustard on Tums!

Yo mama's so fat, she got her own area code!

Yo mama's so fat, astronomers use her to study the effects of an eclipse!

Sounds great! Have fun with that!

I've been seriously considering some attainable goals for the next couple of years, since the last few years have been slow climbing years. With my peak climbing days being more than 10 years ago and 2010 being the first year I've flashed/onsighted a 5.10 since early 2008, I'd like to keep the ball rolling and be able to consider myself a 5.10 climber again. I'll be 40 in just over 29 months and this motivates me to be able to crank 5.12 again by the time that day comes, so medium-term goals will be:

-Lose 15 lbs to be reasonable weight again, by April.
-Maintain regular workouts both with swimming and climbing (backyard woody), by considerably increasing my aerobic and anaerobic thresholds.
-Climb outside at least 15 days in 2011 (closest climbing is 3 hours). I've climbed 20 days in the last three years.
-Redpoint two bolted 11a routes in three tries or less by the end of 2011.
-Redpoint two bolted 12a routes in three tries or less by the end of 2012.
-Keep my trad onsights around four letter grades below my sport grades (or better).
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
