Some kite action... there is actually a decent small swell hidden under the west wind. Hard to see but in the second pic there is some "big air" going down.

As typical this whole El Nino winter, the next morning is pretty much blown flat....sure is pretty though. Maybe we'll get some waves tomorrow.

Another successful trip to Costa Rica in the books. Was able to finally get warm water and temperatures from the cold winter we had on the East Coast. Fun waves with several overhead days despite large crowd due to Semana Santa holy week. Playa Guiones never disappoints!

The surf along the north shores will be small to very small both Saturday and Sunday. The west sides will have very small surf through Sunday as well. The south sides will have small to very small surf through Sunday. The east facing shores will find steady small surf through the weekend.

Zukular:

If you go to the Islands we will never see you on the mainland again for a couple decades. (the voice of experience;)

Yep Luke, with your Moto-X experience and your general balance speed and strength...
You would eat it up !!!

If you like Olaf's pic, then go back in the thread and watch some of the videos of comp's @ Ho'okipa !

I'd 2nd that (at least a few seasons) imo, but if he's headed to Santa Cruz he might as well just keep on goin'

I sail a Laser 2. Very fun and very fast, when the wind is blowing of course. I love climbing too.

Wow ! It's great to see posts on this thread again!
Trundlebum, I have been doing some coast runs from Hookipa to Kanaha lately and from what I can tell it's about even as far as tha ratio of sailors to kiters more sailors in the Hookipa-Sprecks because of FAA rules. Kanaha has more kites lately since there aren't any waves on the north shore. Kiting took off in a big way and got a lot of exposure it also has a much shorter and less painful learning curve. The jumps are bigger as well. The gear is less bulky and the over all crowd seems friendlier.
I am a dedicated wave sailor! If I was just starting out I would probably Kite.
We are making an effort to bring wave sailing back into the public eye with events like the Pistol River Wave Bash in June. Many of my friends from all over the place, including my self, are competing or just attending.(check out the web site that I posted a ways back)
Luke, if you do decide to wind surf prepare your self for a life of commitment that 'WILL!!' take you away from everything that you now think is fun and important. It's that addicting! Maui is definitely NOT the only place to do the sport and Santa Cruz is awesome sailing and surfing(it's close to great climbing as well as you know)
kirra, hope to see ya on your next visit!BTW:the intergalactic communicator is cranking out the ALOHA vibes!
ED, That shot is at Kanaha Beach Park,I've been going swimming with fins and a water proof video camera and have been really impressed with the results.
Aloha for now, I would love to do some routes with you guys some day!
Ryan, How about some Laser stories. Do you get down to San Carlos?.

I shot this video the other day while swimming with just the camera and a pair of body surfing fins on. Karen edited and added the music to it. I feel that from my position in the water it captures the essence of the moment fairly well.

The surf along the north shores will be very small Friday…locally flat. The west sides will have very small surf Friday, locally flat as well…except those areas that are exposed to a small south swell energy. The south sides will have small to very small surf Friday. The east facing shores will find small to very small wind swell breaking through Friday. I know how Steve Addington felt like!

I got a call earlier today.

It seems our young friend Mr. Lucas just had someone give him two sailboards. He called me as he was driving to the water with the boards on the racks of his truck.

Watch out dear Luke, yer in trouble now buddy ;)

Ill keep you guys updated.

Karen was trying out a video camera yesterday and shot this little clip of me enjoying a bite out of a can of woop-ass out in front of Mamma's Fish house. The wind was blowing so hard that I was afraid to jump at all and I was barely able to jibe! There were some good waves but with the wind blowing that strong that I couldn't go down the line at all.

Ah Olaf:
Wish I had an old, BITD Ho'okipa classic vid of Craig Masonville.

"blowing so hard that I was afraid to jump...
but with the wind blowing that strong that I couldn't go down the line at all."

To much sail, or to big a board or a little of 'C'
All of the above.

Remember the iconic Masonville bottom turn?

Very effective for grinding hard off the bottom when over powered.

trundlebum you might find the footage that you mentioned at stableroad.com Ray has posted many of the old films and videos of the people and events from back in the day.
sail 4.1, board 68 ltrs, wind 40mph + = 2 stinkin windy 2 b out on the ocean!
Didn't Masonville refuse to wear a harness ?
Didn't he also give up sailing and start a church?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
