Petzl advises: petzl.com/files/all/technic…

Precautions for use
"Paint and stickers may contain material that, with time, can alter the physical properties of the helmet."
"Certain chemical products, especially solvents, can damage your helmet. Protect your helmet from exposure to chemicals."

Looks awesome and inspiring. Despite Pretzel's warnings, I am inspired to paint as well!

I remember an Ascent article with one of the Lowes having a really cool serpent painted on his helmet. I'll try and dig it up when I get home.

dave, thanks for the warning, i did some research and found that most people used an acrylic paint, with no adverse effects on the helmets integrity. so thats what we went with, im still working on trying to find a good sealer for it though.

The best I've ever seen belonged to my friend, the late Marc Springer. Here it is

Springer's Helmet on Devil's Thumb

Its a helmet cracked open with brain exposed & blood gushing out, painted by a friend of his, to commemorate a recent ice-climbing incident. Marc had a great sense of humor.

Here are a couple more, both painted by Janelle I believe

Hey Arm Jammer,

You might try Future Floor Wax as a sealer. It's a popular sealer for people who paint miniature figures that see a lot of abuse on the tabletop (Yes, I'm a nerd).

It's acrylic based and meant to protect floors, so it should hold up pretty well and is easily reapplied.

I like this idea, having a piece of gear that's personalized. Too bad I can't paint.

My friend Sophie has done some amazing ones. She's an incredible artist and a great climber.

I just used standard model building paint, made some stencil's by hand from tattoo designs (original c'ept lizard) Masked my helmet and cut out the images with a razor. 2 coats later pulled the masking and it looked great. One year later it is still in great shape, I would highly recommend this method, for hard tops...

Check this selection of helmets out!

Sophie is an amazing artist! Paul Petzl is actually wearing one of her designs. Mine is the blue and red lizard helmet in the top row.
