If you've never been able to climb at Shelf Road during the week (as opposed to the weekend), then treat yourself sometime and go there when the maddening (and maddened) crowds are not around. After climbing there for years on weekends only, I had the chance to be there on a Mon-Thur camping trip. With no one around but my partner and I, for the first time ever, I got to see what a gorgeous area it really is. Before that trip, the area seemed little more than an outdoor gym. After that trip, I was able to understand how mountain lions are thick in that part of Colorado.

In other words, +1 vote for any quiet that is possible on weekends.

I went to Mt Evans over the summer for the first time and was really expecting some peace and solitude because of the one-hour hike. When I came around the back of the first block all I could hear was, "YEAH COME ON MARK, HIT THE THE SLOPER, YEAH, SEND!" It turns out the place was packed with big, obnoxious, "elite" crews from Denver and Boulder.

What a dissapointment.

Thanks for raising this issue, John. Lack of basic civility seems to have infected a huge population; not just at the crags. I'm not a prude-I can swear like a sailor; but I like to remain aware of the circumstances-would you scream "FUCK, FUCK, FUCK!" in a shopping mall-or at a church? If you are so narcissistic and disrespectful that you can't control your knuckle dragging impulses...grow up.

I don't know who said it before... but when you hear someone yelling the F Word and you look over-you expect someone to be taking/to have just taken a whipper or something... This hits home for all of us and this is when its appropriate-When you are at a shopping mall the only time you should hear someone screaming cuss words is when their shoe is being eaten by the escalator. There is a time and place. Yes we all have our accidental outbursts or vocalized emotion towards the rock-but its important we control ourselves and respect those around us. We shouldn't have to ask someone on a route to not yell cuss words 8 times. ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE WEARING HEADPHONES. It ought to be implied.
