As the title implies--did anything of great importance to the climbing world happen in 1986?

Not sure if its monumental to the climbing "world", but certainly significant to the US, the first ascent of To Bolt Or Not To Be, the first 5.14 in America, and though not the first "sport route", it was probably The One that made many climbers re-think their style. By my count this was the 5th 5.14 in the world (all 14a).

Also, 1986 was the year Messner became the first to have climbed all 14 8K-ers.

I thought "To Bolt..." was 1988. Am I mistaken? Thanks for the other two, though.

I started climbing again after almost dying of cancer in '85.

Well, I turned 3 and...

The AAC gathered some top climbers and hosted "The Great Debate" to discuss the conflict in american free climbing in relation to sport climbs and bolts.

I don't know if anything of great importance arose from that but certianly was a nice idea.

Yes, you are mistaken, it was November 1986. Scarface was done in 1988, perhaps you were thinking of that.

That would be Bachar and Croft, right?

Magic Line on K2 climbed by Wroz/Piasecki/Bosik. Also the South Face of K2 climbed by Piotrowski/Kukuczka.

WOW, Monomaniac just question marked John Bachar! Yes, it was Bachar and Croft. Bachar being the mastermind of the idea, and also the much more famous climber at the time (and still today, or so i thought?).

Hanson sent 5.tree at the Wood; it was reported a wee bit tougher than 5.to(hard)

:) I knew it was either Bachar or Schultz, but I wasn't sure which one.
