I agree, I feel bad for the belayer. I wouldn't climb with someone who did that.

I wouldn't worry too much about the belayer. I think Werner is pretty solid on Astroman.

Werner wasn't known as Mr. Astroman for nothing. It would be an honor to rope up with the guy on this route.

Clipping the anchor and then running out 40ft for a photo op is poor form. I'm sure he has the route wired, but that is not the point.

Right on. The dude is reckless and just showing off. Total BS. I would never climb with anyone that thinks being super solid and running it way out is cool. It's not people. Someone is going to get hurt or worse! I sure hope that belayer is using a tiblock or something.

A tibloc (chuckle). Seems like a fair solution.

It's all hands after there too! Pansies = yes.
But Russ is right, that Werner guy is still an asshole;)

There oughta be a law! This picture is the height of irresponsibility and should be taken down. I sure hope that belayer is certified- can't see her card from this angle.

Jesus. Why does everybody have to get angry? I was just making an observation. Kudos to the man for free soloing Astroman a lot. He could still make a mistake and die. As for everyone else, chill out for crying out loud, it doesn't matter.

It's quite a run out but the truth is the climbing is rock solid to that point. The stem is the rest before the real business begins. I always tried to get a rest there before venturing off into a couple of inch and a quarter moves then fall into the lay back for ten or fifteen feet. I did however always plug a couple of 2.5" friends in that lower section!

what the heck is the point of having all that gear if you aint gunna use it... gunna get killed being stupid.. get a cramp hope you can set a solid piece

Yeah, and he is an older guy too. What if he strokes out or has a seizure or something?? What then? The old guy will probably die and the belayer will need a rescue. Bad deal all the way around. PUT IN SOME PRO MAN!!!

C'mon. What if he has a seizure? If you spend your time worrying about these things, maybe you should take up badminton or something.

another fish caught, hook line and sinker

Man, I'd never tie in a with a guy like Werner.
Too many years of climbing, too many years of YOSAR,
he might turn the epics into afternoon strolls.
In fact, there's the proof in the pic

(really, do you nay sayers really not know who Werner is ????)

I would NEVER climb with him because he could have a heart attack and make me die and he has high cholesterol in his family tree and his tree is infected with beetles and will probably die since he climbed without drilling new bolts every 3 feet which he probably is not certified to do which will enrage certain PANSIES on this site because only THEY know the right way to do things without a run-on sentence. Maybe you should all tell him to LEARN HOW TO CLIMB!!! I'm sure we will all respect your opinion much more than we do now.

Great photo. Awesome dude by the sounds of it. I'm all for free soloing but even if I did a route which i had soloed before with a rope on I would some gear in like maybe at some part of the climb I thought was weird or didn't like. Mostly to keep my second happy, I think it's different when there is someone below you holding the rope because unlike soloing they are involved in the process but hey that's just me.

This pic just came up on my "feed" and once again I'll say it reeks of irresponsibility and total disregard for safety. Not only is he old and prone to strokes or colitis or something, but he is skipping bolts too!!!! Nothing like a low-T macho man to endanger the inevitable rescuers with his antics.

He could have a stroke on the ground. Better not go for a hike with him either. In fact it's probably best just to stay at home in case people out and about start having strokes all over the place.

Jesus Christ, you're climbing in the mountains. The name of the game is speed and efficiency. Placing pro/cleaning pro takes time and can cause rope drag in some situations. So don't place if you don't need to. It's not reckless its just a matter of having the line wired! I'm sure his belayer was psyched to be there and whether or not you approve of his style is meaningless. You can go climb with your partners and plug a piece every 2 feet in case you have a heart attack the next time you see someone 4 feet above a nut placement and still climbing. You will be passed up by everybody who actually feels like MOVING up the route. Where are all the name callers saying that Earl Wiggins was an irresponsible snob for placing 2-3 HEXES on P1 of SUPERCRACK? (Crickets).............
