Between Rawlins and Lander there is an incredibly interesting area called "Split Rocks". It looks to be a mega Vedauwoo. Anyone know of any climbing history here or guide books (not that I need a guide book; but I am totally interested in any previous climbing history)

cheers, and thanks

There is a lot of climbing there and it is technically BLM land, but to access it you either have a long hike or a long drive across private land. You can find some info in the Lander Rock guide book.
I know that NOLS uses the area occasionally, but I don't know about any private parties climbing there.
The rock is easier on the skin than Vedawoo and there are some longer (4-6 pitch)routes on the main face.
I also thin there is some info on this website about that area.
Enjoy...

That's a beautiful chunk of rock. Really clean granite. NOLS has been climbing there for 30 years or so. There were some old pins from local climbers (Lander and maybe Casper) when NOLS first got started too. Just down the road, a bit further west and north, is Lankin Dome- lots of great and harder multipitch routes there as well.

It is BLM land but the approach is through private land- the ranch that is just east of the Split Rock pullout.

Several nice multipitch moderates on the main face that you see from the highway, plus some bolted face climbs to the right (south). Lots of toproping too.

And don't forget, lots of rattlesnakes and mosquitoes.

Not sure where to find beta for the public- you might try the Wild Iris shop in Lander for a start- Steve Bechtel's book or one of Greg Collins' books might have some too.

The entire area is called Sweetwater Rocks, and there's some beta listed on here under that name.

I wish the rattlesnake thing were a fairy tale... I stepped on a chilly one early one morning on the Popo Agie Falls trail- jumped about a mile but he was too cold to react. Then had a student on a rescue seminar get bit and envenomated by one at the Sandstone cliffs, right at the base of Gunkie in Sinks Canyon, and little bitty baby ones right and left everywhere around the Split Rock face... whee keep your eyes open.

Rattlesnakes: Yep. Two summer ago saw about 10-15 on just a couple miles of dirt road. We escaped to some small mountains and Forest Service camping south of 287 ("Green Mountain" BLM?). We just slab climbed Lankin Dome - Good friction. Unique and worthwhile. Combine it with Fremont Canyon for a good 2-3 day trip. Have fun.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
