Hi all,

I'm looking for 1 or 2 guidebooks that will primarily cover Whitehorse/Cathederal/other parts of NH and Maine. Also, one that covered other parts of the NE such as the gunks and dacks would be great.

I just want to get a couple books that cover most areas I will use without spending a ton. Which ones do you find the best?

Evan

Evan,
My buddy from NH has a copy of "Rock Climbs in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (East Volume) by Edward R. Webster" This is "the" guide that I know of for the Eastern side of the Whites. Its 12 years old though. They signed copies at Ragged Mountain (Interval NH) if it is any consolation. He has a book for Cannon and the Franconia area but that is even older.

For Adirondack guides, get the new Lawyer / Hass book if you are a guide book fiend. It is an awesome work and they have a running list of updates available on the book's website plus printable topos for the popular crags.

Definitely go with the Webster guide for Cathedral and Whitehorse. It's got a lot of info, some of it very interesting.

I think Jerry Handren is putting out a guide for the areas, but that might be a year or two away. His old guide (out of print?) is helpful if you can find it.

For rocks in the North Conway area:

"Rock Climbs in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (East Volume" Edward R. Webster

For rocks in the Franconia area:

"Secrets of the Notch" Jon Sykes.

If you want to go real cheap you can find most climbs on a combination of New England Climbs neclimbs.com/ , Chauvin Guides chauvinguides.com/guidebook…, and here on Mountain Project.

The Ed Webster guide is by far the most useful guide for the white mountain region. I use it frequently and love it. If you want a basic guide to cover general info "Rock climbing new england" by stewart green has good info but not a lot of route info. This book is helpful for directions but it doesn't even cover main cliff at rumney!

Yeah, skip "Rock Climbing New England." Full of errors and omissions. So, actually, pretty empty if you think about it.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
