Marisa Watkins (who not long after became Marisa Fienup) was belaying a friend up Mugu Rock. As I walked across the front of the bolder, Marisa moved in-line with the massive road cut that was made in order to redirect the PCH. During a narrow window of time each year,very near the summer solstice, the sun sets in this giant notch.

A local climber from Thousand Oaks climbs the 5.11 crack & face that is Mugu Rocks hardest TR. The light of the setting sun on this day was angled just right so that it bounced off of the semi-gloss paint that is used to mask the rock's graffiti. The resulting reflection is unlike any other that I've seen on sandstone.

Just a few hundred yards up the road from Mugu Rock is a trailhead for the Chumash Trail. One of the oldest continuously-used footpaths on the continent, Chumash Trail climbs steeply up from the coast and leads directly to the top of Mugu Peak. The views of the coast and the Channel Islands are unbelievable.
