The amount of seemingly climbable rock down there is mind-boggling. That long rib between the areas your circled for example... Is all of it accessible and somewhat solid?
Yeah, it's called Rock Canyon for a reason, for sure! Not all of the rock in the picture is perfect, of course... But there's definitely room for several hundred (a thousand+ ??) more routes if you want to walk a bit. And keep in mind, this is only one side of the canyon! There's even more rock on the north side. And we get lambasted for having "The Fever" and bolting "every little piece of rock." Hmmmm...
Meh. Bolt away, more stuff to play on. You guys seem to be doing a great job of bolting lines that can't go on gear, which would be the only point of contention... Some of them might seem over-rated or even questionable for people who visit the place only occasionally, but in the end if you're the one hauling the drill and buying the bolts you're the one deciding if a route goes in or not. As for having the fever, the development in Rock Canyon is so much faster than anywhere else (later start I guess, and more motivated crew) that it's bound to raise some eyebrows.
As a side note, this is a great and very useful pic. A lot of the areas in this part of the canyon can be really tricky to find and the directions online can be confusing if one has never been up there before, so I think this will help a lot of people make it out to RC's awesome limestone that people have put a lot of work into. Thanks, T-hig.
This is a great pic. Very useful to get oriented to all those fins. I had some friends in college ski some of those gullys in the 90's.
I think the overbolting comments are for all the little scruffy junky stuff near the trail and squeeze jobs near existing lines. This stuff is alltogether different.
These are most of the areas on the south side of the canyon. There are some other areas that have routes that haven't been redpointed yet. If I'm missing something, let me know. If something is mislabeled, let me know. I've been to all of these areas except the Bosko Wall. Photo taken from the summit of Squaw Peak.
