| As I clipped the ancient bolts on the Kor roof on Washington Tower's South Face, I marveled that anyone could swing a hammer that far out, let alone aim it at the right place and hit hard enough to chip granite. Yeah, he's 6'4", but still. He should get royalties every time someone climbs his routes. EDIT: Washington COLUMN I mean. | FLAG |

Must have been a bit two run out - LOL - I know I aided that bolt ladder with stirrups LOL and coming over the lip was a inspirational ordeal... Kor's the man! | FLAG |

| sheesh....easy there folks. Was FUNGUY's comment a bit ill advised and insensitive? Probably. Maybe even a bit dickish? Perhaps, but it would seem that you all have proven yourselves to be not much better. Maybe the best thing to do is to (in a classy manner) point out why his comment was inappropriate. Furthermore, from my perspective, Layton deserves to be treated for his health problems because we live in a country that has little excuse for not looking after its sick citizens. I am sure that there are countless librarians, road builders, fireman, etc. that have lost their health insurance and very much need financial help to cure their potentially terminal illnesses. I don't see anyone donating to these folks' causes and surely many of these folks did more admirable things for society (taught children, put out fires) than climbed a ton of routes. Climbing is more or less a selfish endeavor (and I do a lot of it) and I am sure that Layton didn't put up routes simply because he thought all of us would enjoy them. Thus, I find the argument that he deserves health care simply because he is a climbing legend to be a weak argument. Nonetheless, I do hope that he raises enough money to treat his illness and I wish him well. Cheers. | FLAG |

| I completely agree with J. it is pathetic that we are the only industrialized country to not provide basic health care to it's citizens. Also I saw his show last fall and had a great time seeing and hearing first hand about his classic routes. Seriously if you get the chance to see one of his shows go, you won't regret it. Albers wrote: I am sure that there are countless librarians, road builders, fireman, etc. that have lost their health insurance and very much need financial help to cure their potentially terminal illnesses You're sure about that? Yeah, there are lots of firemen out there without health insurance, right. (I'm talking about full time pros, not part timers or those with weird gigs.) I'm "sure" that every full time, pro fireman gets sweet-ass health insurance, retirement bennys, etc. Hard to say who "deserves" what, but I'd rather donate my bucks to a living legend like Kor than to some random schmuck (of which I am one). Not saying the random schmuck shouldn't get health care, but that really has nothing to do with whether some of us choose to send a few bucks Kor's way (and get a good talk out of it too). And--except for volunteers--the librarians, road builders, and firemen that you mention were doing it cuz they were getting paid. How much did Kor get for climbing (maybe something from Nat Geo, I don't know)? It's apples and oranges. | FLAG |

You're advocating censcorship because you don't agree with what the OP said and, personally, I think that's worse than asserting that Kor is cashing in on his status. Just state your opinion and leave it at that. Don't ask for threads to be deleted because you don't like them. --Marc | FLAG |

Dude what plannet are you living on...or err climbing on? At least 95% of his routes were put up before clean climbing had been contemplated and the gear had been invented. | so is it disgracefull that the Dallas Cowboys cash in on their fame by selling tickets to their events, I would say no. I would gladly pay for a ticket to Lyaton's events just like my good friend would happily pay for a ticket to a Cowboys game. Really there is nothing wrong with either situation! I personally thank Neptunes for giving all the proceeds to Layton so he can continue fighting his illness. I wish our healthcare system was better because a lot of people dont get the help they need! | It's interesting reading about viewpoints concerning profiting from one's own reputation. Ha ha ha. Is that not what sports stars do with product endorsements? I think most applaud this sort of thing. In Layton's case, he is profiting from the sheer good will he has amassed over his extraordinary body of work as a climber. His stories of his exploits in and of themselves are tremendously valuable as entertainment. So in a straight analysis, it's worth it to hear the guy talk. He does not have a lot of self authored books like say, Joe Simpson. Now Joe of course profits from his labors and adventures, too. Does that rub anyone the wrong way? The fact is, Layton was not all that sure people would even want to pay to listen to him talk, hence the one time venue. But he was amazed and pleased to be such a crowd draw. And a lot of people didn't make the original show. I didn't, for one. A friend of mine visiting from CA just got to see him on Friday. Way cool, I would say. Now to the issue of you. Yes, you! What if at some point people actually would go to a slide show to help you with your medical bills? Is that wrong? I hardly think so. If you create such VALUE in your life, just by living it and sharing it, then you deserve the respect and money that can leverage. Minnesota Fats certainly understood that. Uh, not that he and Layton have a lot in common. Hell of a pool player, that Fats. I hope in some small way this has helped add something worth thinking about to the discussion. | FLAG |
