My climbing partners and I visiting Linville Gorge for the first time this weekend. Does anyone have GPS coordinates to any of the climbs in the Amphitheater area? Ditto for any track logs of the approach trails or online topo maps. Thank you.

Getting lost is part of the adventure of climbing in Linville. If life was predictable and all mapped out for us it wouldn't be fun. Have fun and enjoy! I'm jealous! Linville is my favorite place on the planet!!

The Linville Gorge section here on Mountain Project has the GPS coordinates for the Table Rock parking lot where the trail into the Amphitheater starts, but I'm not aware of anyone publishing coordinates for specific routes. The usefulness of such information would be pretty limited; GPS isn't precise enough to put you right at the base of a route, plus it wouldn't tell you how to get there in the first place.

I think your best bet is to get a copy of the Selected Climbs guidebook. The directions and trail maps to different sections of Linville Gorge are pretty good and will get you where you want to go. Also, for your first visit to the gorge, going with someone who's climbed there before would be a good idea if you can swing it.

Thanks Saxfiend. The book is on order but it's taking forever to get here. Yeah, we're stoked about coming down. Long drive from the D.C. area. We're hoping to link up with a friend on Saturday who lives down there but we're on our own for Friday. Hope the weather cooperates.

If you're going to be meeting someone who knows the gorge on Saturday, you might consider climbing Friday at Table Rock. Unlike the Amphitheater, the trail up to the cliff at Table Rock is very easy to find, and there's some excellent multi-pitch lines up there. Then on Saturday, your local buddy can show you the way down to the classics like the Mummy and the Daddy, which is what I assume you're planning to climb in the Amphitheater.

Hopefully, you'll get your guidebook before you leave, then you can do what you want. Just be aware though that even following written directions, the trails aren't real intuitive, so keep your eyes open and bring headlamps!

Good luck.

Lol. That's what my friend suggested as well. BTW, I haven't found any coordinates for the base of the routes but I have located the track logs for a large number of the trails. Headlamps are a good idea.
