Did it have anything to do with the belayer being 15 feet away from the cliff?

I don't believe so--he just hit it really awkwardly against the wall, but I hear you on the belay location.

having just climbed this route, a soft catch would be mandatory if you blew it at the crux above the climbers head- something the belayer couldnt give from his position...
