Help a fellow climber realize his dream... And cool new pics daily!

Hello everyone,
This isn't the usual MP post but I am looking for all the help I can get and I think that the MP community could really help out. I haven't been that vocal on here before but I look at it pretty much everyday, especially when I was bored at work.

So here it is...

I'm a dirtbag climber and struggling photographer trying to make it in the photography world and I've got this opportunity that could really jump start my career and change my life.

It's a photo contest in which you design your dream photography assignment and get people to vote for it. The winner gets $50,000 to make their dream come true.

My idea is mountain and climbing related so I thought people might be supportive. Here is the short summary.

"To photograph the high mountain people of the world, the ways in which they have adapted to living at high altitude, their culture, daily life, and to document the ways of life that are vanishing in the high mountains."

Climbers have a lot of impact on people living in the high mountain regions of the worlds, some good and some probably not so good. My idea won't focus on climber interaction with high mountain people but it certainly might come into the picture.

If this sounds interesting to you, you can vote for me and learn more about my idea at the link below. Or if you want to be really awesome and earn extra karma points you can forward this on to your friends, family, climbing buddies and whoever.

And oh yeah, if you want to check out my photography I have a few pics on here, but my website is lucasbarth.com/

Thanks for your time,
Lucas

  • *Edit. Im going to post up a few of my pictures everyday if I can to try and keep interest up, so keep checking back for some cool pics.

lucas, that sounds like a neat project. Have you selected what people and where you will focus?

Im sure $50,000 would be nice, BUT if for some reason you cant get that the actual cost of spending a month in the Karakoram, Greater Himalaya and Hindukush (northern Pakistan) will run you about $3000. This would include hotels, transportation, camping fees, permts, meals, porters, fuel, road taxes, and a guide who can introduce you to the local Baltis, Hunzakuts and Chitralis.

I voted for you, good luck.

Hey Ali,
Thanks for the info. I haven't decided on any particular communities to visit yet. Sounds like you have a good bit of knowledge about the area though, so maybe I'll ask you some questions in the future.

You have an admirable goal and my vote, live your dream!

I second Ali's suggestion of traveling to the Himalaya's. I was fortunate enough to realize my dream of climbing in Nepal in 2007. Not only is it financially easy (once you get there), but you will find the people and culture are wonderful.

I tend to take pictures to document my adventures and not as art, but you will have plenty of material to work with in the Himalaya.
