Free Soloing-rappel hijack (Ethical Question)

Is it generally considered rude if I hypothetically free soloed a route then asked to rappel with a party going down? (I bring my own harness)

I guess that wouldn't really be good style, but I'm just thinking of convenience.

What do you think?

True. Lets call it being really lucky and finding your way to the top of a route accidently.

I've hitch-hiked back down.

Happens to me all the time on the flat irons in boulder. i wear a harness just in case, even pack a rope for excercise...plan to downclimb. and get offered a ride down. don't really care whether anyon calls it a free solo or not. if you ski a nice line on the pass and hitch hike back up does it negate your descent.

I would give you a ride without hesitation. Unless, of course, you barreled past me at a belay, climbed directly above me, and elvis legged at every hard move causing me to duck for cover. But, since you had the grace to ask this question, I suspect you wouldn't do that.

Also, I'd still call it a free solo. It would be a free solo if it was a walk off, wouldn't it?

Cheers
Evan

Obviously it's still a free solo.

I don't think it's rude if you have a cord with you. If you have you're own cord and you ask to rap with someone, they can say no and feel confident that they didn't "leave someone stranded on top of a formation."

If you didn't bring a cord, then you are putting them on the spot to help you out of potentially dangerous situation.

Perhaps the best form would be to ask before leaving the ground.

'Good" style, whatever. Call it what you like. The point is to not impose on other people, whether by sketching above their heads, stepping on their fingers, or putting them in a position they didn't ask for.

I'd charge a beer per pitch. Either that or a pitcher of beer.

Yeah, I changed my mind. I think it would still be a free solo. Steph Davis' free solo of the North Face of Castleton tower still counts even though she didn't carry the BASE parachute.

You have to be able to get down by yourself or you are just a rescue waiting to happen. Assuming you are just trying to speed things up by joining another party on rappel, there is nothing wrong with asking.

I guess if your worried about "tags" then it is not a free solo . Ethics are in the eye of the beholder .

If you climb something with no gear and you want to call it a free solo and rap down , so be it . Who really cares what you call it as long as you enjoy doing it .

If it's about asking someone for a ride down and they are cool with it , no problem . I would not impose unless I had no other options .

I figure free-solo should only mean you went up it free.

Would it be a redpoint(pinkpoint?) if you pre-hung draws with multiple extensions per bolt so as to clip every 2 feet? I would figure so, as long as you dont hang.

Is it free solo if you place a crash pad at the start?

what if i climb tied in to a rope, but have a lot slack in the system? is it a free-solo then? what if there's enough slack to cause groundfall? :)

seriously - i'd prefer to have someone hitch a ride on my rap rather than downclimbing above me. it doesn't seem rude to ask.

For the most part I when I solo I prefer a walkoff or downclimb. However, once I did take a rope for a solo, on Owl Rock. The climbing was just too good NOT to solo!

I've never hitched a ride, though.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
