I saw Kurt Albert solo this once, so it has seen a second solo ascent. It was the late '80s or early '90s. Wolfgang was there taking photos, but he did not solo it, or at least, not while I was watching. Probably the sickest solo I've ever witnessed, although Kurt made it look casual.
Keen, thanks for the heads up, I was unaware that a second ascent had been done at the time of my original post. I recall a few months back being approached by Steve Levin for some solo photos within the Eldo cave area. At that time I told him that my proudest free-solo was NED, and that of all the (hb) solos I had done in the cave area, NED was the only one I had only soloed once, hence, "one and only" in the caption, although I guess confusing. He then replied that Kurt Albert had also soloed it. That was all that was said and when his cool Eldo Guide came out, he gave Kurt the 1st solo ascent, which in fact was not accomplished until years after my original solo, which was in spring of 1985. Either way it is one of the bolder highballs, in my mind, ever done. Looking at the photo close up I notice that one of the people bouldering on the Bastille in the back ground is Charlie Fowler. How ironic, seeing how he did the first lead of NED. Also, Keen, I want to compliment you on your photos on the site, I've really enjoyed them. Climb On!
I was trying to figure out who that was in the background. Man, those were the days, Bob soloing NED on one side of the canyon, Charlie bouldering over on the Bastille, probably numerous other honemasters clinging to the canyon walls at that moment. Great stuff! Thanks for sharing all these classic photos.
