But when some anonymous person told me what I should and should not complain about, then calls it "bitching", it got to me. If I give someone money for a product, then they don't deliver said product, that's BS. (Am I alone here?) As far as I know, Alpinist never published quarterly reports on their financial situation. I was not aware of their problems, I don't read Outside magazine so I couldn't have know from some past article that they were going to tank. They did however happily accept my money for a 2-year subscription. If they knew they could go under at any time, I wonder why they readily accepted subscription money? I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they will refund people their money. I haven't heard back from them on this though.
nope - your not alone - I'm in the same boat - as i'm sure several are. It sux, but I think this is a risk we take. I wouldn't count on getting anything back.

If they ran out of money and had to fold, losing the money on the subscription sure beats not getting paid for the last week of work (or worse).

I'll miss the magazine.

Notice how he doesn't name any.

One of the things I liked and admired most about Alpinist was that their content came primarily from the people who did the stuff the articles were about. It was written by climbers for climbers.

My favorite climbing publication of all time. There is something wrong with the world.

Not only was it a great mag, but they put on a good show, sponsored community events, etc...

Profit and size notwithstanding, how many of you out there realized that they were Diamond Media Partners with the Access Fund since 2003... that means that they were giving the AF $20,000+/year throughout their rocky financial road. That's as much as the 2 bigger mags ever did.

Let's not dis' them too hard just yet... they obviously are not crooks and cheats- Crooks and cheats don't give $20,000 a year to charity.

Now, if you paid for a 'script with your credit card, you can get credit back that way. Check or cash... 'nother story.

Well sounds like terrible management to be giving 20,000+ away during your financial crisis.

My subscription only had 1 more issue left. I feel bad for the folks who just pony'd up $$ to resubscribe.

Bad management? Maybe... but they certainly were not greedy swindlers.

A sad day indeed.

Once again the lowest common denominator triumphs. I don't want to hear any whining from anyone who didn't subscribe. You get what you pay for. You don't support a quality mag, you don't get one.

Last time I checked with their CS folks, my expiration date was further out than the rep's computer went. OTOH, it was worth it to me to try to preserve one of the best climbing magazines of all time.

I think this makes issue 25 the most expensive magazine I have ever purchased, as it was the first, and last, of my subscription.

I really enjoyed the history and the photos. I also preferred paying a bit more to flipping through all the ads....

no they weren't at all. And in the midst of the turmoil as they collected funds at the film festival they were donating it to Surf Aid as well.

If they floundered while taking my subscription dollars and giving them to the Access Fund, i can live with that. :) But I'll still miss the mag.

Has everyone else received 25? I just subscribed and haven't received 25 yet... which would make issue 25 the most expensive issue I never even got.

ugh?

Thanks,

I don't agree with Dougald, I think individual subscribers should have been paid back before bankruptcy if possible. As a small business owner, I've been stiffed in settlements but you expect things like that to happen occasionally

with an individual customer, it's personal imo
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
