My partner and I went up to climb the Final Link on the Crescent Crack Buttress yesterday evening after work. While we were on the upper slabs our backpacks at the base were emptied and our phones and wallets stolen.

I am assuming the perpetrators were the climbers on Mexican Crack, as I see no reason for a meth-head to hike 20 min. uphill to rob someone. If you were the climbers in question, please drop me a line and restore my faith in the climbing community.

If you find anyone showing off my portfolio on a slightly banged up 16GB white iPhone 3G, kick them in the teeth.

As a public service announcement, YOUR SHIT 'AINT SAFE NOWHERES, LOCK IT UP

That sucks. I've always assumed leaving stuff at the base of a climb was safe if it was a 20 minute hike in. Hope it is returned.

No shit. Wow.

Seems like this stuff happens every blue moon here (see the route "the great rip off" on the gate buttress for example). But, parked cars gettin' busted into is worse, and, now that the local LO has stepped up in the canyons to look for that, seems like the next target would be your stuff at the base. Had to be someone familiar with how long you'd be gone.

Have been leaving extra stuff out of my pack this season as I get tired of fixin' the squirrel chew holes in my pack, but, this is ugly.

Thanks for the head's up!

Looks like we need to fire up the LCC minuteman thread on Utahclimbers...

What bullshit. I leave (or used to) my stuff there all the time.

That sucks about your stuff, being stolen at the base of crescent crack. My buddy and I climbed mexican crack at around three o'clock and we sure didn't steal anything. There were a few people walking by us at the base and I don't want anybody to think we did that.
We did see a lone hiker walking up to the base of the climbs when we left at around 5 o'clock. At the car we looked back up the wall and we saw somebody on crescent crack. The lone hiker didn't look like a climber. Maybe you got your faith back, but mainly I wanna make sure we don't get accused of stealing your stuff.

I think its the same damn kids with the spray paint.
They might be pissed that we took down their tags.

To whom it may concern on behalf of the two Mexican Crack climbers...

I am really bummed about your stuff getting ripped off...I am also bummed that apparently, we can't just leave our extra goodies at the base of the crag any longer...but I am mostly bummed that the first people you would accuse of stealing your stuff would be other climbers? I'm all for restoring your trust in the climbing community but it's going to be tough when you start out taking shots like that. Honestly, I'm offended.

Anyhow, we didn't have anything to do with your stuff going missing. If anything, I wish I could have caught the perpetrator in the act, as we walked by, so I could have kicked them in the teeth for you and for me. We did however, as mentioned above, see several people cruising the base of the crag while on route and at the belay. I couldn't say that they all looked like climbers. For whatever it's worth, the Crescent Crack area is one of the first and easiest of the LCC crags to get too.

Hope this helps and sorry about your luck.

Thanks for getting back to me Chongo and NotGuilty, one of my main reasons to post was to try to dispel the idea that other climbers could jack you.

Now if you would just come downtown with us I think we can clear this whole thing up. While you're technically not a suspect you are what we would call 'a person of interest.' You won't need a lawyer or anything fancy like that, we just want to ask you two a few questions, in separate rooms and compare, you know, just paperwork stuff.

In all seriousness, thanks. You two were the only people I saw and I was bit hasty in the accusations, I apologize.

Sorry to hear about your stuff. The canyons aren't safe and if your tweaking what's a little walk.

We had a pack with a rack and other stuff taken from the bottom of Beckey's Wall 3 years ago and then this summer my Rocket Box was opened and looked in at Storm Mountain. Luckily it was empty.
Called the Sheriff just to let them know that it happened and was told that they get calls "everyday" about theft in the Canyons.

It sucks to rack up at home but you can't leave extra stuff at the car or the bottom of routes.

Bummer to hear this. Leaving gear at the base of a climb has been dodgy for a long time. You might be surprised at what a meth head will do for a fix. The economy sucks so theft is going to only get worse. Climb with you pack and call it training. It is all training.

Grayhost ... be careful in how you throw out accusations. Years ago some climbers got their junk stolen from LCC. The next day they were out looking and checking out folks in BCC. They thought I looked like one of the "usual suspects." By the time they got through accusing me they racked a few charges ranging from assault to unlawful restraint. Fortunately for them, I did not file a complaint but the sherif deputy working on their theft case was really pissed.

BTW If you check out pawn shops look for a Marin commuter bike - last week some meth heads took mine.

I feel for you. I had about 7000.00 dollars of gear stolen from my car and home. The cops feel it is tweakers from rose park. I was lucky because I had insurance. If someone tries to sells anyone tons of mix of old cams/new cams/shoes with seam grip all over them. please let me know.
