Wow! Looks like one of those really nice stellar cloudless days that makes climbing in the Black Hills even more great. I can smell the juniper and sage right now!

Take a good deep breath and hold it. Most of those trees are gone now, either the direct victims of the Mountain Pine Beetle or the efforts to limit its spread. See this shot, mountainproject.com/v/10719163..., a few further on.

It's really quite sad. It hasn't gotten consistently cold enough to kill the beetle over the winter lately. There are whole valleys and mountainsides of dead pines in the black hills, areas that are not actively managed like Custer State Park. When it burns, it's gonna be a fire to remember.
