Is that how them elk turn into deer? I was wonderin' what time of year that happened..

It's not so much the time of year, but when they go above 8,325 Ft. above sea level, the deer become elk.

They're actually like Pokemon, they start out as deer, and if they survive enough years without getting run over by marauding tourons in giant SUVs, then they evolve into elk. They usually stay in the elk stage for many years and many games of rock-paper-antlers until one day they ascend to the level of the almighty MOOSE and depart for the western side of the divide.
