Can anyone recommend some good climbing films that are available from Netflix?
I just found and reserved Masters of Stone V, Vertical Frontier, and Return2Sender.
I was disappointed that they don't have Front Range Freaks or Scary Faces.
Any other suggestions?

How about some classics, like "The Mountain" or "The Eiger Sanction"?

If you are in the mood for a good horror /climbing movie...
I thought The Descent had some pretty entertaining caving/climbing scenes.

There are some bouldering ones. Like Best of the West, A Day in the Life, Soul Cal.

sounds crazy but here's a few more: goodbye mr. chips (1939, climbing in austria), charlie chaplin (the gold rush?), some mc cauley caulkin movie (the evil child?), and of course who could forget the climbing scenes in deliverance or the oddysey (especially with mercury flying around next to oddyseus and him climbing up to some goddess with the hots for him and all that). chrres.

Cliffhanger:

The powder actuated bolt gun!

Free soloing with a giant rack but no rope!

Hey Ubermike,

You mentioned the powder activated bolt gun.
Have you seen the commercial where the two guys are re-papering the billboard and one of them falls?
All of these instantly inflating balloons pop out of his vest to cushion his fall?
Man, I want one of those.

Touching the Void is really well filmed

Sounds like a rip off of a concept from Neal Stephenson's book 'Snowcrash' (which is probably a rip off of something else.), where the protaganist has something akin to a full body airbag. Awesome book. Or James Bond's avy ball jacket; one of those would be cool if it worked.

Back on subject: 'Take it to the Limit' is a terribly awesome movie w/ climbing in it. A bunch of friends and beers make it a fun watch. The bear scene is my favorite.

Hey Tom, hadn't seen that one, imagine the philosphical debates you'd have there.....

Touching the Void is truly engrossing.

The mention of the bear scene reminds me of the most important safety factor when in bear country:

You cannot ever outrun a bear.

Therefore, it is imperitive that you be able to outrun your partner.

This was a really cool movie but ultimately made for the DVD because its so easy to fast-forward through some of the mind numbing suffering. Kind of like in the book when I kept reading about how, "It hurt so bad I puked and then I passed out..." page after page. I mean it had to be one of the most amazing, gory tales of survival ever and I hope never gets repeated. But definitely made for skippong lots of pages.

Watch the bonus track documentary where they dragged the Joe and Simon out to the basecamp. Joe Simpson was in some kind of reality TV state of mourning and playing the whole thing up. Then they kept trying to corner Simon Yates into some kind of emotion outpouring about the whole thing. It was hilarious watching him repulse their every effort by basically saying, "Look, I've had an amazing life and travelled to many beautiful, exotic places and had many experiences... This place was simply where another of those experiences happened" or something like that.

Some other titles available are Dosage Vol.2, A Day in the Life: 5 Women Who Climb, and a handful of Everest docs, including a good one of Hillary and Tenzeg Norgay. Oh, and I think they have Inertia Vol.1&2.

ps- I've been encouraging even my non-climbing Netflix-using friends to send emails to Netflix asking them to include more climbing titles. I, myself have sent them several asking for the remaining Dosage Vols. (1,3,4), Rampage, Karma, Hard Grit, Pilgrimage, Front Range Freaks, etc. I think if we bombard them with requests, they might actually increase the library. Band together!

Marty Brenner got it right, "The Eiger Sanction" is just friggin great. And even though it ain't climbing, get the complete 1st and 2nd seasons of "Deadwood". You'll thank me later.

Back in the mid-80's the crew I ran with would occasionally rent a portable VHS camera and film ourselves at Castlewood or Penetente.

Lots of static, 4-point climbing; chalking, shaking out, etc. Lame commentary, attempts at humor... really boring s..t.

That crap is still way better than "A Day in the Life, 5 Women Who Climb."

Speaking of Netflix, don't be too tempted to relive your youth and seek out all those films from the '80s you thought were so cool at the time. You will embarass yourself in front of your wife and children.

Wow- was all that on the back of the DVD cover or were you the films' publicist? I sense that Wonderwoman would be more into Pride and Prejudice than Hank's excellent suggestion of seasons 1 & 2 of Deadwood; not that there's anything wrong with that.

From what I can remember between lapses of unconsciousness about "5 Women.." was a remarkable lack of dynamics; the segment at Mt. Charleston being the exception. I queued this one up from Netflix mostly for my 6 yr. old for some role modeling; within 10 minutes she was off bouldering on my fireplace. By the time it was over, my Y chromosome was really aching; kind of like shopping with the wife.

At least it didn't feature the morbid extreme ropeless stuff. Whenever I watch the Potters, I can't keep from thinking about Derek Hersey and Dan Osman.

I always thought a great classic was K2 with Michael Beihn was a great movie; cheesy yes but good none the less. And also relatively hard to find. Return2Sender was also an awesome movie incorporating more than just climbing. Touching the Void though is probably the best movie out of all of them

Were one to, say, join the AAC, their library would send you any number of classic and not-so-classic flicks. Money goes to perhaps a better cause than the corporate parent of Netflix, IMHO.

What's AAC?

What about that Bond where he ascends the rope using shoe-string prusiks? And skis down a bobsled course. And hooks up with gorgeous women. And shoots people. And has class. Wow....Bond is awesome...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
