BOULDER COUNTY - Rescue crews resumed their search for a missing climber at daybreak Thursday.Rescue crews resumed the search for missing hiker, Lance Hering, on Thursday, focusing on two areas where search dogs showed interest. 9NEWS at Noon. August 31, 2006.

He was knocked unconscious by a fall and then missing when his friend returned with help.

Lance Hering and Steve Powers went hiking in Eldorado Canyon State Park Tuesday night. While they were free-climbing on a rock face, Hering, 21, fell 10 to 15 feet. Powers said Hering was knocked unconscious by the fall.

Powers waited until Hering regained consciousness and then went for help. When he returned with a search and rescue crew early Wednesday morning Hering was no longer there.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office says 60 search and rescue personnel from the sheriff's office, Boulder Emergency Squad, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Alpine Search and Rescue Group, Boulder City Parks and Open Space, and Colorado State Parks are searching for Hering.

The search area is about five square miles in rugged, heavily forested terrain with steep slopes. The sheriff's office says the terrain is slowing down search efforts.

Rescue dogs found two areas of interest in the canyon before crews called off the search Wednesday evening. Crews planned to focus on those areas Thursday.

Hering is 6 feet 2 inches tall, 180 pounds and was last seen wearing long white pants and a torn black T-shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Boulder County Sheriff's Office at 330-441-4444.

Exactly where was the victim located when his partner left for help?

Based on the articles in the Daily Camera, the missing man and his partner were bouldering at 10pm Tuesday night ~1.5 miles up the Eldorado Canyon Trail when he fell 15 feet and rolled another 30 feet downslope. That is where his partner left him to get help. The victim left rock shoes, a water bottle and some blood behind when he got up and walked away. There are about 100 people in the area looking for him today.

Thanks for the link, Jo. The article describes the search as being concentrated around and throughout rocky areas, but it makes no mention of the creek. I am in Salt Lake, and I am not aware of the current water depth, although memory tells me that there are eddy pools in which a body could become lodged and hidden during this time of year.

Have the search parties scoured the creek?

The water is very low. I was out there yesterday and saw a guy walking up and down the creek presumably looking for any sign of a body. So, it appears they have thought of that.

The official search has now been called off without finding Lance. Family members and friends will continue to search.

As I presumed this was all a hoax to get out of going back to war.
