Climbing Mag and the Rock and Ice Gear Review

Some big changes at Climbing magazine were announced recently, with the return of Jonathan Thesenga as Editor In Chief. A few years ago he was "let go" after an incident at Joshua Tree with the NPS. Matt Samet has also returned to the mag as a Senior Editor. I wish them good luck in their return and look forward to them steering the ship. How about a review of Mp.com!

Press release

On the subject of climbing magazines has anyone seen the latest Rock and Ice Gear review. Now, I'm no professional photographer but the photo on the cover sure looks over exposed and a little weird to me!

Now, I'm not trying to bag the mags, I have subscriptions to both of them, but I'm disappointed in the latest gear review issue. It appears to be no more than a listing of equipment, weights and other numbers. There also seems to be many item's missing. For example, why aren't alien's listed? I used to really enjoy reading the gear issue, party because I'm a gear freak, but mainly for the feedback from the reviewers. Unfortunately, once again no feedback, no comments from using the stuff, and I'm left with the dilemma of which shoes to buy again this spring as I work towards my 5.7 redpoint!

So, if you are a gear manufacturer and have some gear you want tested and/or reviewed, how about getting in touch with us. Mp.com is growing very quickly, for example we have spread to the east coast now with The Gunks a recent addition. We could provide real tangible reviews of your products and then link it to a gear forum to foster questions and feedback etc.

If this sounds worthwhile please don't hesitate to contact us.

Yeah, I'd have to agree - the new R&I gear issue is a waste, unless your idea of useful info is having a compendium of selected gear manufacturer's spec's all in one place. Nothing new, no reviews, ho hum, snooooooooze-a-rama. And yeah, pretty poor cover shot as well. I'm thinking more and more about popping for that Alpinist subscription I've wanted for a while now...

Yup, I agree there. Seemed more like a catalogue then anything else. No real useful info. Would be great to see reviews of some of the newer products and innovations that are coming out. And yes kind of a poor cover shot. But life is good. But wondering what the point of that issue was.

(Maybe they left out the aliens due to the recent recall controversy).

I just started a rant in the General Climbing Forum on this subject after getting the latest Rock and Ice magazine a couple of days ago.

I had to pick up the Climbing gear review to see what the fuss was about. Pretty lame compared to years past when the mag was fat with all kinds of gear and real reviews.

The mags seem to be geared more towards the starting climber these days. I am sure it is hard to appeal to boulders, trad, sport, ice and wall monkeys at the same time. It would kind of be like one mag covering every sport in the winter olympics. While they all have cold involved they are vastly different sports. Climbing has changed from 30 years ago. Anyway, I usually enjoy the pics and would probably subscibe if they had more pics like the surf mags or I had more money. Personally I would rather use the subscription price to buy a used alien on e-bay.

yeah, but Beth Rodden is kinda hot. Didn't realize she was quite so... grown up. R&I sucks big ones in general.
