Comments: Alan's Roof is also visible from the top of the Safari Wall, just up and to the right.

Comments: The bolting could be modified just a bit to make this a better route for the 5.10 climber. Overall, the climbing was fun and the rock good too.

Comments: The anchor on this route is total crap. I've used beefier chains for my dog. I posted this to put it on MP for the list for whoever gets there next to upgrade. If I wasn't freezing yesterday, I would've swapped out the manky chain for quicklinks.

Comments: Would it make sense to lower the anchor to the last protection bolt, thus avoiding rope gnarling for a few feet of irrelevant climbing?

Comments: Trying to find your way around Devil's Head with Mountain Project is just asking to get lost. A print guidebook like Rampart Range Rocks will help a lot with the detailed maps, and Rakkup is even better as the GPS tracks will take you from the parking to your desired crag.

Comments: DH is still open, but there's about 6 inches of snow, so a good set of snow tires or 4WD is needed as the road is not plowed. The rock was sunny and dry today. The road is gated right after Thanksgiving weekend.

Comments: I can't believe that thing still stands. Every time I drive west on I-70, I look to see if it's still there. Looks like quite the adventure!

Comments: My son took a huge whip on this a couple of weeks ago when the hanger came off the bolt. The crux bolts just need to be replaced with Powers 5-piece so that the nuts don't loosen. Lock washer or not, wedge bolts aren't a good idea for crux bolts, especially if there is a likelihood of a lot of falls.

Comments: Actually we did comfortize the pockets on that one. We'll give it another look next week and file more perhaps.

Comments: Samantha,

The Technicoulior will be added to the Rakkup app sometime this summer. It sits on a steep, north-facing hillside and is best on a hot summer day. It's pretty hard to find, so we have to record the GPS tracks to get there.

Comments: Thanks for the hardware upgrade on this great route. There's still one old bed frame hanger up high for historical purposes.

Comments: I agree with the other posters, this route is probably not a safe lead in its current condition. Several of the bolts are old SMC STAINLESS STEEL hangers on CARBON STEEL bolts. This is a great route and definitely worth the needed maintenance.

Comments: Not likely, as they seem to keep Rampart Range Road closed as long as they can in recent years. You can call 303-275-5610 and ask about the status, which is a good idea before heading up only to find the road gated.

Comments: Do not stray left on the upper 1/3 of this route as there is a giant loose flake held on by just the tip. There is a small "x" block underneath the really big, dangerous one. This would be a good candidate for a trundle with a ground crew to keep passers by out of the way.

Comments: Couldn't help but notice the parcel of land for sale at right next to Sand Gulch campground last weekend. Some enterpreneural climber should snap that up & set up a Miguel's West. Add more camping, pizza & beer, how could you go wrong with something like that? Then on slow days, just walk over & get some pitches in. Any takers?

Location: CO : South Platte : Devil's Head : Radio Head
By: Tzilla Rapdrilla When: Dec 10, 2014

Comments: The area was closed off almost solely to protect the microwave towers and their access. Another better, and more dog/kid friendly access to Radio Head has already been established. More details to follow before next season. Recent discussions have indicated that the USFS does have climbers and our impacts in proper perspective and appreciate all that we do to mitigate the impacts of other users.
