Comments: If you want to get a final ice climb in before spring gets here, this may be a good choice. The ice is fat, lots of water running and is in significantly better shape than any of the other Front Range ice areas.

Comments: I took a Boulder Colorado Mountain Club group up ice climbing this past Friday. The water was running well, the ice was really fat. Usually, there is a cave between the left and right ice flows, but it was completely filled in. Lots of chandelier ice as well. If you want to get in some end of the season ice climbing in the Front Range, you may want to consider this ice.

Comments: Drove by the Upper and Lower Falls in Boulder Canyon today. The ice for the upper falls looked really good (of course lots of climbers), while the lower falls wasn't in as much as in the past but still climbable. A couple of groups were climbing the lower falls as well.

Comments: Decided to climb Hidden Falls today. The conditions were cold (10F), but no wind and no new snow. The main flow was pretty chopped up and as Jim mentioned 5 days ago, you don't need to swing much, just hook. The water started running while we were there so I am hoping that it can heal up the ice soon. I lead the small ice to the left of the main flow, and it was really brittle. Hard to get in a couple of screws, but a nice little climb.

Comments: Has anyone been to the Upper or Lower falls at Big Thompson? What are conditions like and can you get across the river?
Thanks.

Comments: Climbed the North Facing ice just before Christmas. Two ropes can be used to top rope the ice, however, the ice on the left side is a little thin. The ice on the right side was much better, however, the spring was running very well so be prepared to get wet. The middle was not close to filling in and the ice cycles in the middle were very fragile, so care must be taken not to break them.

Enjoy!

Comments: Climbed on Friday, February 23. The ice is in pretty good shape, mostly hooked during my climbs. The icicles referenced by the previous condition report are there, but usually form up this time of year. Care should always be taken when ice climbing, and the belayer should never be in the possible line of fire for ice.

Overall, the ice was good, the weather was great, and Hidden Falls is still very climbable.

Comments: I lead a CMC ice climb on February 9 and the ice was in excellent shape. There were all different quality of ice present; plastic, chandelier, and brittle. The spring has really kept the ice in good shape.

Comments: I was cross country skiing yesterday in Peaceful Valley. The ice above Camp Dick is in, but it is not in great shape. It looked like styrofoam. The ice will need several days of cold weather and clouds before I would climb it. The ice is not as large as it was last season.

Comments: I drove by the ice in the South St. Vrain just west of Lyons yesterday, and it is the fattest that I have observed in several years. Haven't had a chance to climb it yet.

Comments: Due to the heavy snow and winds from the past few days, the road to parking lot was closed at the Sandbeach Trailhead Parking Lot yesterday, January 9. If you are going to go climbing at Hidden Falls, it is going to be a much longer hike in until the Park Service can plow the road open.

Comments: Climbed Hidden Falls today. The ice was the best I have observed in the last couple of years. Water was running down the middle and right side.

Comments: This picture was taken in the morning just after the sun started to shine on the south facing ice. By the afternoon, a significant amount of ice had melted from the climb. Needless to say, one needs to be careful when climbing on sun exposed ice.

Comments: Climbed the upper falls at Big Thompson ice today. There is enough ice on the Big Thompson River so you can cross over to the gully that leads to the ice. The ice was in pretty good for the upper falls and no ice was present for the lower falls. If the cold weather stays for several more days, the ice on the left side should get much thicker due to the water running down the ice. The right side of the upper falls was quite brittle.

Comments: Climbed Coors Lite today. The bottom was really fat probably the fattest I have seen, the short middle section was wet, and the upper section was not in great shape - pretty beat up and old, brittle ice. The left side is not really in and the right side can be hooked. Be careful not to break off the few remaining ice cycles on the left side of the upper section.
