Comments: Fun route. Without taking gear along, this is a good Black Canyon primer.... Borderline ground-fall potential in the 30' runout.... Several pieces could potentially be placed from green Alien up to red Camalot or so. Really positive climbing, though.

Comments: This past week the anchor was updated with 2 1/2"x 4.5ish 5-piece by someone other than me. The classic Hong anchor was a 1/2" lag bolt pounded into a dry hole. The aluminum "hanger" was quite stress-fractured. Thanks for the work, sir!

Comments: They're both in the book. The one to the left that intrudes on Allied Forces is Contempt of Court (12-something). I forget the one on the right. And they're not new - late 90's, I recall.

Comments: ^^^Joe, the raps can be done with a single 60m, but the one from the top of the first pitch of Solar Slab will leave you at the top of the no-pro 5.4 section. If you're not comfy down-soloing a few slab moves, a 70m will take you down into 3rd class terrain where it's not too bad to scramble down.

Comments: This may be the funniest thing I have seen in awhile. Thank you Ev, and of course Senor VaG, for keeping me entertained. Uh, Ev, if you're unfamiliar with American public land management, there's this thing called "Wilderness", and it's designated by our beloved Congress, and this particular route happens to fall within one of them. Typically within "Wilderness", there's no "choss police" or "trammeling" (actions that reflect the hand of man, in case you slept through HS English). Hence, no ... more >>

Comments: Nice! glad folks are getting on this. wish that bolt could've been in a better position... A 2-3' threaded rod glue-in might be sufficient to go through the flake where you really want the clip...

Comments: MIYG, no and yes. The rap from the top with a 60 will require a little downclimbing. Make sure to hit the rabbit's arete station. Otherwise, rap station to station. NBD. The rap off the pancake belay to the tree ledge will come up short - swing climber's right, then downclimb a not exposed 5.4ish move. As Doug says, the walk-off is pretty chill, but make sure you go far enough. The first notch with a cairn has some 5.4ish downclimbing.

Comments: @nate: It is a bit extreme, but being that close to an urban area of 1.6M makes it necessary to have stronger regs, as well as not having a huge budget for rangers. Given the graffiti problem in the Calico as it is, for example, having the loop open all the time would 'probably' increase that. Ideas for a more streamlined, mobile-friendly late exit system have been discussed for awhile, but without significant public input, may never be implemented. If you have some ideas, feel free to let t... more >>

Comments: Yeah, personally they never bothered me. There are a few notable exceptions of trails that are officially promoted/signed, but not officially "designated" as of yet - fire ecology trail being the first one that comes to mind. Straight shooter tr. was in a state park in-holding when it was constructed. Since then it's been incorporated into the NCA, but the People in Charge of Such Things didn't seem to notice there was a trail there. So as a social trail, it's not designated and can't receiv... more >>

Comments: Not steep enough. Tourists wouldn't go for it. Plus, that would take away the only possibility for manly driving in the vegas area. Pretty sure arrows not fed work. the trail and sign from Rocky Gap are not technically official, yet. I'm sure some wire-brush work or a little discrete use of a proper solvent would be sufficient to restore this little bit of wilderness character.

Comments: Storms this past fall have littered the slabs above the power failure raps with debris. Obviously, care is needed. It was sketchy enough prior to that. It is every climbers' responsibility to bring sufficient hardware to repair natural rap stations as needed. $40? 1/2" webbing is like 20 cents/foot. On any route with natural anchors, carry 30' and don't be worried about chopping your dyneema slings. Or leave a cordalette or something. The reason no one has commented on the chockstone rap ... more >>

Comments: Don't rap like handren mentions - it puts you 30m from the trail in full scrub oak thrash. There's a cl3 descent a little bit sooner on the left (LDC). May be cairned, since it is the "hiking" route to the top.

Comments: This is an approach worth doing a recon run on. AF and I climbed this last may, parked in the loop, and were roping up in 1:35 or so. Descent summit to car was 1:15, hiking quickly but not absurdly. Technically it was 1:25, but we stopped and sat for 10 minutes as a herd of 26(i forget exact #s, but is 20+) bighorns ran in front of us. Outstanding route, but a certain fitness level required.

Comments: Mtg @ Albertsons at 9am. I think the groups will be divided depending on how many folks show up. Pine Creek has a bit of work to do, so the majority of folks will prob go there. Bring a lot of water. Lisa is the new point person, so any questions can be directed to her.

Comments: If you are referring to the anchor which is down on the face, yes there is only one bolt. It's in a poor location for setting up a toprope, but does make a nice directional. Or are you referring to the anchor on top of the pillar?
