Location: CO : South Platte : Cathedral Spires Area : The Bishop : Bishop Crack (5.12c) By: Shaun Reed When: Jan 27, 2013 | view comment >> | Comments: One of the best splitters in Colorado! The landowner Jim came up to visit while we were climbing, and he is a really nice guy. He told us The Bishop is actually on his property and that he is cool with climbers up there. HOWEVER, he did mention that the approach beta in Haas' new South Platte guide is NOT correct! He wants climbers to take the trail up to the Dome and traverse across from there. We did both ways, and hiking past the Dome doesn't seem much longer. So please respect the landowner... more >>

Location: CO : Alpine Rock : Mt. Evans : The Black Wall : Undertow (5.10a A4- R) By: Shaun Reed When: Oct 10, 2012 | view comment >> | Comments: Hi Jay, sorry for the delayed response, but I think you would be able to get away withouth the offset Aliens. It's only the first pitch that they are handy for, and there are other gear opportunities, so it wouldn't ever be too run out. I don't typically place stoppers unless I can't get anything else in, but I would imagine you could use stoppers, especially offset stoppers. On one attempt, Brad didn't have the offset Alien on the upper half of the first pitch, but he did find some RP placem... more >>

Location: CO : Alpine Rock : Mt. Evans : The Black Wall : Undertow (5.10a A4- R) By: Shaun Reed When: Jul 10, 2012 | view comment >> | Comments: Thanks, guys! I still need to clean the "Ahab" board from the last pitch. I think the biggest reason no one has done this line before is that the final chimney on the last pitch seeps water over the "Ahab" bulge straight down the last pitch. For the last two years, the seeping started in July and didn't stop for the rest of the season. I put the board up there in a crude attempt to divert the flow. Ha! I think it may have done some good, but the last pitch isn't too hard and is essentia... more >>

Location: CO : Alpine Rock : Mt. Evans : The Black Wall : Undertow (5.10a A4- R) By: Shaun Reed When: Jun 25, 2012 | view comment >> | Comments: After two seasons of cleaning, replacing bolts, and fighting wetness in the later part of the alpine season, I was finally able to free this gorgeous line with Brad Wilson last Saturday (6/23/12), with both leader and follower freeing every pitch. The whole route is probably no harder than 5.11+, but as it is very sustained and at high elevation, it sometimes feels harder. The majority of the route follows the aid line, except for half a pitch that completely avoids the A4- roof traverse. The r... more >>

Location: CO : Durango : East Animas : Apple Cider : Sweeney's Special (5.11d) By: Shaun Reed When: Jul 25, 2008 | view comment >> | Comments: Sweeney's Special is a great extension to Texas Sucks. Belaying beneath Sweeney's may be hazardous to the belayer's health, and a 60m rope will get you safely back down to the ground.

Location: CO : Durango : East Animas : Stargazer : Stargazer (5.12b) By: Shaun Reed When: Jul 14, 2008 | view comment >> | Comments: Unbelievable line! Takes great gear, lots of small aliens for the crux section. It does not see the traffic it deserves, so go get on it!

Location: CO : Alpine Rock : RMNP - Rock : Glacier Gorge : Arrowhead : Arrowplane (5.11a) By: Shaun Reed When: Jul 12, 2005 | view comment >> | Comments: This route is what alpine climbing is all about. Long, sustained, scary climbing in the middle of nowhere. I did this climb a couple days ago, and it felt like a first ascent. Route finding proved to be very difficult, though the headwall to which to finish was obvious. After a couple of scary runout pitches on bad gear, my partner and I decided we must not be on route but getting up to the headwall, we soon realized that flared is just the name of the game on this route. Justin, to give th... more >>
