Comments: My partner and I were heading down gully for some route when those guys were putting this route up. We, the "locals", had no idea who these guys were. But we did note that they were poaching a plum line from right under our noses. We might have been a touched miffed except the speed, grace and efficiency of their assent amazed us and certainly belied the seriousness of the climb. We were impressed. So with a respectful nod o' the chapeau, we bumbled off on our way for the day. I've thought of th... more >>

Comments: This really is a wonderful pitch. The only down side for me is that it doesn't go on for hundreds of more feet. Totally woderfunful.

Comments: The upward-angling travere goes through the polished sheen and on to a hand crack visable below the bush on the skyline.

Comments: Ha ha ha, good one, MossMan.

I haven't seen them myself, but any bolts on the Sun Deck are a lame shame!

Maybe I will take my crow bar next time I am there.

Comments: Rustie used to recount that climb in vivid detail. Some climbs are like that.
He had studied that wall from so many angles and lighting conditions that he had detected a massive continuous fault system like a giant exfoliation flake that encompassed at least a third of the Dragon Wall. During an attempt at one desperate point, the rope tugging pulled off a flake that Rustie said was well over a hundred feet tall and more than sixty feet wide. It was so massive that it blocked out the sun as it p... more >>

Comments: I can feel the white hot sizzling.
Smell the scent of melting gear and charring flesh.
Nowhere to hide. And when the sun goes sets, it's going to get real cool.

Comments: There is so much terrain and so few routes on the walls of the Black.
It will take a new level of old boldness to push the futuristic lines that await.

Comments: I'd be curious to see what it all looks like now that the Kor's Cave ledge has tumbled off. That was a spooky, hollow sounding, vibrating and massively exposed perch. I wonder if Baillie's ratty haul bags are still there hanging off the anchors?

Comments: Nice pic Sketchy. Real purty body jewelry. But if you were looking for some shiny bling wouldn't it have been cheeper to frequent the gumball machine with the shinny plastic rings at Wally World? Best of wishes for you. Hey can you get them to switch your IV with a margarita drip?

Holler if you need anything.

Comments: I think this is an appalling development. I can't believe that real climbers either through ignorance or arrogance would endeavor to diminish the proud tradition of fierce ascents in Escalante. Chuck would eat them for breakfast were he to encounter them. They need to take a good hard look in the mirror and become educated as to the history of the area. There are plenty of obscure choss piles that the weak of head and heart can drag down to there level.
I say hands off the historical areas like ... more >>
