Comments: The "Diving Rock" is called "PETE's PEBBLE". Any Baraboo Kid could tell you that. Just North is "Rock 8" which was more for sunbathing and eyeing up chicks. And any Baraboo kid could tell you that as well.

Comments: John: Reagarding the rock slide you heard. I recall years ago my geology prof. saying how rare it was that people have witnessed significant "natural" rock slides or rock avalanches at Devils Lake. He cited the angle of repose of the talus slopes and how tight the quartzite blocks are. So if indeed a rock slide occured it was an exceptional event. I will be curious to hear more about this.

Location: WI : Devil's Lake : East Bluff - East Rampart : Pseudo Hawk's Nest : Hero's Fright Variation (5.8) By: Peter Arndt When: Aug 14, 2009 | view comment >> |
Comments: Paul:
I think that was my point as well way back in March of 2004. I thought that the route description was that of "Full Moon Over Baraboo" which is to some how negotiate the roof/overhang not using holds on Hero's Fright and then climb the thin wall above.
FMOB is a fine route and I think if done clean is even harder than its 5.9 rating. But it is Devils Lake 5.9 right?!

Must not have been your Birthday. Good thing for the viewer. Seriously, the start of this climb is (I think) way harder than the 5.7 grade. Way to Go!!

Comments: Eric and Jay:
A very quick count gives me (33) "named" features in Swartling's diagram of the West Bluff. That would include the obscure "Turtle" and "Hangman" just above and north of the Slant Boulderfield. That 33 also includes "Hollywood and Vines" and the "North Slope". Too damn bad the Panoramic is gone as that would give a nice place for an Adult Beverage to sip on and talk of the Glory of it All.
Jay, I'm shocked you don't have the Bible errrrrrrr I mean the guide book at the ready.

Comments: Eric:
The "Tower Circuit" sounds very cool. Would need to have a well planned strategy. Knower spoke of climbing one route on every "Named" buttress/tower from the Guide Book on the West Bluff in a Day. I don't know if he ever completed it. This would be the time of year to do it. Zig Zagging up down the Bluff and traversing all the boulder fields would be half the fun. Light rack and hip belays would be the order of the day.
Speaking of quests. TK (hope I'm not "outing" him) has almost... more >>

Comments: At this point I can't divulge the location. It is not on State/Public land or part of the Nature Conservancy but rather it is on private land.
I plan to "effort" permission from land owners this spring. Many deer stands which indicates this area is heavily hunted. Owners get a little nervous about allowing people on these lands.
As far as the sandstone is concerned it is not as hard as DL or Dodge, however it is not chossy as near the Dells.

Comments: Swartling's new guide lists a Variation of climbing the middle of Dungeon Wall left of Dungeon Wall Crack. Did it yesterday and found it more interesting and perhaps a tich harder than the 5.7 crack.
No name but I would propose "Iron Maiden" 5.7+.

Comments: Have not climbed every 5.8 in the park but I would echo Jay on this one. Very hard indeed for the grade. The Bible errrrrrr Swartling's guide cites RR as a benchmark for the 5.8 grade at DL.
