By: Nathanael Hansen When: Sep 24, 2012 | view comment >> | Comments: In case anyone's interested, although the Forest Service's Waldo Canyon Fire map shows only partial closure of Rampart Range Road from the Garden of the Gods, there are still roadblocks by Balanced Rock.
According to those maps, Ed Rock is not in the closure area, but hiking out there will take a while unless someone knows how to get access to the private gated community south of the cliff....

By: Nathanael Hansen When: Jun 30, 2012 | view comment >> | Comments: Thanks to the young men of the Colorado Springs North Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is now an established trail to the Castle from Wellington Lake.
It starts at the end of the lake's camping areas (next to the gated entrance to a Boy Scout Camp) and goes all the way up to the southern base of The Castle. You'll need to traverse north to get to the base of routes like Castle Corner, etc... (or you could just break from the trail when you feel like it)

The directions were great (you pass 4 dirt jumps before you get to the dead tree where you break from the main trail and head up the ridge). Cairns marking the trail were excellent.
We played on the West Hurricane Wall the whole time, working our way down. Thanks for the trailwork and routes! If the hillside at the base of the wall wasn't fairly dangerous, it would be a great kid-friendly place!
