Comments: This boulder was found nov 2001 and it was called irie heights boulder. That same fall is when flesh wound was done and Shannon T put a problem in that goes out right from flesh wound. There was also a problem put up left of virgin that same fall.

I am putting out a new guide book for Black Hills Limestone due spring 2010. It will include Spearfish, VC and looking at Falling Rock. I do not know the routes for Falling Rock, if anybody can help me out that would be great. This book will have pics of pretty much every wall, not the hand drawn topos like the past. Plese email if you have some input.

Comments: Just a reminder to those that are going into the VC. The only public way in is the back way off of Sheridan lake road. The Dark Canyon access is not open to public even if you walk or ride your bike. You still cross private property! Vehicle clearance can not be your excuse for not going the back way. Many low clearance cars have made it down the back road.

Comments: If you look at the guide book for Sunshine it shows Lost Ninja as the left most route on the Big Black Face. That is now wrong. The left most route on that wall is a new 5.9+/5.10- that was put up by John Walker a few years ago. The route you asked about is actually Lost Ninja. At one time there was a plaque at the base of the new route, you are not the first person to get mixed up. There should be a new guide book next year to stop the confusion.

Comments: Road 150/1E update
I went to the NFS open house on Sat morning and met with the rangers about the road closure. Once I mentioned the road I was concerned about they new what I was talking about due to the letters that they have been getting. They seemed to be very receptive to our cause. What this showed was keep the letters coming.

This letter is a request for support in regards to the USFS Travel Management Plan (TMP) for the Black Hills National Forest. The TMP proposes that Forest Service Road 150/1E be closed. Comments: For those people that do or are wanting to climbing in the VC now or in the future this is for you. The NFS is in the process of making an offroad use plan for the Black Hills. Along with this plan are going to be some road closures. The NFS has a few different options that they can go with. One of those options could include closing FS road 150 which is the access road to the VC. Comments: What routes were pulled? I know of 2 or 3 on the right side of the draw that were pulled but there should be 3 or 4 on both sides that still have bolts.

Lost Ninja is actually three routes right of Pakistani Route. A new 5.10 was put up in a few years ago. There was a plaque marking the new route, must have been lost. How was the rest of your canyon trip? Hope it was good.

I see you still look at this site. I was not trying to throw you under the bus, that is why I did not mention your name. Dave asked a question about Faith and I answered honestly. If he had asked about another route I would have answered that honesty also. I have openly admitted my faults when asked and vowed to never make those mistakes again. Glad you had a good time in the canyon. The route right of the gavel is 13c and called Witness Protection. Matt Wendling from WY got the FA last year. The other route you talk about is called Faith. It was the first route put up at the Shadow Lands in about 95-96. Then when the main development started in winter 02-03 a once local that will remain unnamed thought he would re-establish the route his way by drilling one pocket and reaming out another. The guide book has about 300+ routes in it. I think we have about 500+ now. If you have an area in mind, let me know and I can get you the route info. There is talk to make a new guide book in the next couple years.

Yes I did extend the route, It was not to make the route harder. It needed new anchors and the route should have gone to the top from the beginning. The route was at the hard end of 5.9 so a little 5.10 added is not changing much. Just look at it as a good stepping stone or just lower at the last bolt where the old anchors were.

This it to inform all climbers that have or are planning on accessing Victoria Canyon by way of Dark Canyon to boulder or climb NO MORE ACCESS THIS WAY! PRIVATE PROPERTY! It is trespassing if you go in this way no matter where you park. There is another way in by way of Sheridan Lake road when the USFS road opens on May 15th. I think I have the answers to your ? The farthest left most route on the big black face was put in since the guide book. So now the left most route is about mid 5.10 if you follow the bolt line, if you go out left into the choss it is about 5.9+. The 2nd route from left is Lost Ninja 5.9. That should put you on track. That would make it 7 routes on that main wall. The next route you come to after the black face is Cougar Pupil and left of that is a newer route Eye of the Tiger 5.10c... more >>
